A prolific composer, he produced many great works, including operas, symphonies, concerti, chamber, and choral works.Cavatine, Op. 144 was written in 1915 as a musical gift to Boston Symphony trombonist George W. Stewart who helped with the composer's trans-Atlantic voyage to North America as the special guest of the World's Fair in St. Louis.The 5-minute work has become one of the most popular solos in the trombone repertoire with its beautiful phrases and expressive feel.This great music has been beautifully arranged for Bass Trombone and Piano by Wade Goodwin.The recording below is performed by the arranger Wade Goodwin.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792231). John Frith began composing the `Sonata for Bass Trombone and Piano` for Stephen Fissel of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2008. Originally it was intended to write only a single movement. When Mr. Fissel requested more did the idea of a three movement Sonata begin to take shape. In order to create a cohesive piece, Mr. Frith decided to use the opening Trombone figure of F-E-F as the thread to create a thematic unity within the three movement structure. The Piano introduction to the slow second movement bears this `motto` in reverse (EFE) and this is duly adopted by the Trombone and continues to be evident throughout the movement. The third movement, likewise, uses (EFE) but this time beginning with the Trombone. The composer remembers describing this movement to Stephen Fissel as a manic Waltz and it does,indeed, reach fever-pitch by the Coda. The relationship between the two instruments in this Sonata is never that of soloist and accompanist, rather as a conversation between two equal players, each in partnership with the composer’s ideas, committed to creating something of beauty.The work is written for very advanced performers and is about 14 minutes in length. Originally titled Sospiri d'Amour, this instrumental miniature, Sospiri (Sighs), Opus 70 was originally intended as a companion to Salut d'Amour. Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Bass Trombone and Piano as an homage to the great English master. The work is about 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.
