Horace Weston was often called the greatest banjo player in the world when he was alive. He published a couple dozen banjo solos, mostly through S.S. Stewart's publications, in the late 1800s. He was one of the first African-American composers to get recognition and respect for his invaluable contributions to banjo music and American culture. Here it is presented in tablature for the first time. This works for 5-string banjos tuned in C. This is like standard/open G tuning except you lower your fourth string from D to a C. There are Roman numerals where using a barre with your left index finger can help execute some of the trickier passages. This is a fun solo that will definitely become part of your regular repertoire for many years to come. I hope you enjoy playing it!

Noam Pikelny released his debut solo album on Rounder Records in 2017. 'Sugar Maple', which features on the album, is a mid-tempo, melodic banjo solo, which nicely encapsulates many of Pikelny's innovative banjo techniques and compositional quirks. I would suggest that this arrangement be considered Advanced banjo, due to the complexity of certain sections. This arrangement will bring you many hours of study pleasure and allow you to get right to the heart of Pikelny's unique sound and approach to banjo writing. Noam Pikelny has seen my arrangement of 'Sugar Maple', via his Artistworks online teaching class and told me it was perfect.The tuning is standard Open G - gDGBD.

I wasn't deliberately aiming for a beginner's arrangement, but I noticed it was naturally in Open G, with no drop thumb, and nothing difficult to reach except perhaps the 4th string F#... If you are a beginning clawhammer player and want to add a classical piece to your playbook, especially if you like the Wizard of Oz, this is one to pick!

This is an arrangement of the Christmas Classic Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer for clawhammer banjo.Although I listed as intermediate, it is really more beginner/intermediate.  It uses mostly bum ditty, hammer ons/pull offs with open strings, and some simple drop thumb patterns.  The whole song stays in the first five frets.  But I marked it as intermediate because it uses a variant of Cumberland Gap tuning, and the tempo is rather fast.  It is a great tune for learning just how much one can produce with basic clawhammer techniques in Cumberland Gap tuning.
