After a repeat of the chorus, an elongated tag brings us to 3/4 time and D major for The Holly and The Ivy. With a slightly slower tempo, this beloved carol sings out over an evolving right hand ostinato that is no longer confined to root position chords. This piece is perfect for intermediate players and beyond who are ready to add independent parts for each hand. Use of power (barre) chord shapes in most measures really help to simplify finger positions. Once the chord shape is in place, other notes in the measure can be quickly flatpicked by just repositioning the thumb. Makes what sounds like a very challenging piece much easier to approach. If you're a Jethro Tull fan, you know that this is one of those songs that really sticks in your noggin. The old axiom, if you can sing it, you can play it holds true. Suggested skill level is Advanced Beginner and above. This can be practiced at any speed and the use of barr chords keeps the fingering pretty simple. This isn't intended as a complete song, but rather is a study on the blues chord progression and an exercise in strumming and timing. Get the basic pattern down and you can add a startling amount of improvisation and your own idea of what the blues should be using just basic pentatonic in the box notes/shapes.
