**LYRICS ADVISORY**
Please keep in mind that is a comedic/parody song in the southern gospel swing style.
Although the lyrics are not explicit, a few of the verses are a bit irreverent.
You may best remember this song from the movie, Cool Hand Luke. Actor Paul Newman's character, Luke, plays a rather meloncholy version of this tune while he is in the jail workhouse. Newman actually learned to play the banjo expressely for that scene.
I ended up scouring several banjo/bluegrass websites while researching this song. I found that there are a BUNCH of added verses and choruses with ambiguous origins that have become popular with performers over the years. I have included them for you on the final pages of the packet. The original lyrics appear in bold print in the text box at the beginning of the page. The variations follow and are labeled as alternates.
