Actor Paul Newman's character, Luke, plays a rather meloncholy version of this tune while he is in the jail workhouse. Newman actually learned to play the banjo expressely for that scene. I ended up scouring several banjo/bluegrass websites while researching this song. I found that there are a BUNCH of added verses and choruses with ambiguous origins that have become popular with performers over the years. Any of the chords in the Intermediate tab may be subsituted into the beginner tab for a fuller sound.Intermediate tab adds more complex three finger chords and suggests a syncopated strum as described on the lyrics sheet.
