O'Connor learned this tune from fiddling legend Benny Thomasson at an early age. Thomasson developed the parts of the tune as incorporated in this arrangement. O'Connor added a variation to each of the Thomasson parts in addition. After Meyer finished out the arrangement with his bass lines, College Hornpipe has a new and different life from the one found on the early O'Connor recording Soppin' The Gravy. The trio performed the piece for a nation-wide television audience at President's Clinton Inaugural Gala. One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements( mine too!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by the violin with many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl (Viola) sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The Cello has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Viola) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother (Violin) knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. And D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Violin: I do not know its name. Then E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. The Violin has the melody. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. Players will choose. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903776). CONFUCIUS SAID: STRING TRIO violin, viola, cello. An interpretation of some of the annual ceremonial music honouring the great Chinese philosopher. Quotations of his sayings about music are included, for a performer to speak. This piece is inspired by the Confucius Birthday Ceremony, probably dating from the Chou Dynasty, 1046-221BCE.   The music, called Shao Music, has been played in all its magnificence since then. The event is highly choreographed and controlled musically, aiming to reflect and celebrate Confucius' philosphies of peace.  Traditional Chinese music is primarily melodic, and western ears may feel the lack of harmonic richness. A player should read out the Confucius quotation at the beginning of each movement.     How to play... The melody and some of the bass line consists of the rows of pitch-classes in verses 1 and 2 of Honouring Confucius (Ta Tsai Kung-Tzu)   I have introduced rhythmic variety, harmony and some phasing and use the traditional pentatonic scale as rendered by the Chinese classical music instruments-drums, bells, flutes, and strings.  The flute symbolises balance.   A man without...is a very short saraband, a courtly dance using all the pitches of verse 2 in order, with the strings muted.     It was by music... uses  major triad fanfares where possible, with an occasional portamento.    Music produces a special... is a sensuous waltz:  as with most of the movements, I have shamelessly used a tonal harmony under the notes of verse 4 (illustrated).    When music and courtesy... plays the notes of  Verse 6 in quintuple time over a drone.   If one should desire...is a barefoot parade (gymnopedie?) in Satie's style.       Duration 7 minutes.

The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. Misty Moonlight Waltz was initially a fiddle waltz Mark O’Connor composed as a 16-year old in Seattle Washington. He often performed his own waltz in fiddle contests he entered. In 1999 O’Connor arranged it for string trio and later adapted it to the violin, viola and cello combination.
