Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, also known as O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, is a Christian hymn for Advent. Here are some interesting facts about it:

Ancient Origins: The hymn synthesizes the great, ancient O Antiphons sung for Vespers during Advent.
Tune and Translation: The familiar tune, Veni Emmanuel, was first linked with this hymn in 1851, when Thomas Helmore published it in the Hymnal Noted, paired with an early revision of Neale's English translation.

Variations: While the Veni Emmanuel tune predominates in the English-speaking world, several others have been closely associated with the hymn.

Concerto: Veni, Veni, Emmanuel is also the title of a concerto for percussion and orchestra by James MacMillan, the most frequently performed concerto composed in the 1990s.

Significance: The hymn is significant for its ancient origins, its association with the Advent season, and its musical adaptations, including a notable concerto by James MacMillan.

These facts highlight the hymn's rich history, musical significance, and enduring popularity.

Composed by Dr. John Bull. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #874076. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1282833).

John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a doctor of music at the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.

John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Some of these composers include:

William Byrd: Byrd was an English composer and one of the most influential figures in English Renaissance music. He was a contemporary of John Bull and is considered one of the greatest composers of his time. Byrd's compositions include sacred choral music, keyboard works, and consort music.

Orlando Gibbons: Gibbons was an English composer and organist who lived during the same period as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, particularly his anthems and verse anthems. Gibbons' compositions are characterized by their expressive harmonies and intricate counterpoint.

Thomas Tomkins: Tomkins was another English composer who was active during the same time as John Bull. He was known for his sacred choral music, including anthems and services. Tomkins' compositions are notable for their rich harmonies and expressive melodies.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who was highly regarded during the Renaissance period. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his variations and fantasias. Sweelinck's compositions had a significant influence on Bull and other composers of the time.

These composers, along with John Bull, were influential figures in the development of Renaissance music and significantly contributed to the repertoire of keyboard and choral music during that era.

O Little Town of Bethlehem is a beloved Christmas carol with an exciting history. It was written by Phillips Brooks in 1868 for the Sunday school children at his Philadelphia parish, Holy Trinity Church, following a pilgrimage to Bethlehem in 1865. The hymn beautifully describes the little town asleep on the December night. It gracefully modulates from a description of Christmas into examining the meaning of Christmas, encouraging charity, faith, and the coming of Christ into the human heart. The hymn is generally sung to its original tune, St. Louis by Louis H. Redner in the United States, and to Forest Green by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland. The hymn has continued to be a favorite for many people as they celebrate Christmas.

Handel's Water Music is one of his most famous compositions. It was written for King George I's pleasure barge trip along the River Thames in 1717. The Water Music is divided into three suites, each containing a variety of movements. The music features a mix of dance rhythms such as minuets, bourrees, and hornpipes, along with lively fanfares and slower, more stately airs. Its combination of light and playful music with grandeur and pomp has made it one of the most beloved pieces of classical music. Water Music has been performed by many orchestras and is a popular choice for special occasions, such as coronations and weddings. Its enduring popularity has helped to make it one of Handel's most famous and beloved compositions.

Weddings during the time of Handel were usually quite extravagant affairs. The ceremony was typically held in a church and was accompanied by a full orchestra. Handel's own compositions were frequently used to provide the music for the ceremony. This was especially true in London, where Handel was based and where his music was extremely popular. Handel wrote a number of pieces specifically for use at weddings, including the popular Wedding Anthem and the Wedding Anthem in D Major. Handel's music provided a sense of grandeur and elegance to the proceedings and was often used to give the wedding an extra special touch.

The festivities following the ceremony were also often quite lavish, with a large feast and plenty of dancing. Handel's music was often used to provide the background music for the dancing, and he wrote many dance suites that were specifically designed for this purpose. The bride and groom would often have a special dance to the music of Handel's Water Music, a particularly popular piece for the occasion. Guests at the wedding would be treated to a variety of Handel's works, ranging from his operas to his oratorios, which often had a spiritual or religious theme. Handel's music provided a sense of joy and celebration to the wedding and helped make it an occasion to remember.

Chopin's Prelude Op. 28 No. 4 is significant for several reasons. It is one of the 24 Chopin preludes known for its brevity, harmonic and melodic richness, and emotional depth. The piece is only a page long and uses a descending melody line. Chopin requested that this piece be played at his funeral, along with Mozart's Requiem, which adds to its significance. The Prelude is often described as heart-rending and emotionally powerful, and it continues to captivate audiences even long after the composer's death. The piece is in E minor and is characterized by a descending melody line, making it emotionally evocative and musically rich. The Prelude has been the subject of various analyses and tutorials, highlighting its emotional, philosophical, and technical complexity.

Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are quite typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle in particular is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear is an 1849 poem and Christmas carol written by Edmund Sears, a pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. The lyrics were set to the tune Carol by Richard Storrs Willis in the United States, while in Commonwealth countries, the lyrics are set to Noel, a later adaptation by Arthur Sullivan from an English melody. The whole song comprises five stanzas, and some versions omit certain verses. Interestingly, the Christmas carol doesn't explicitly mention the birth of the Savior, making it unique among Christmas songs.
