This string trio was commissioned by the music society of King's Buildings, the science campus Edinburgh University, in 2011. It was premiered by members of the Edinburgh Quartet in April of that year. The work is in three movements, each inspired by the work of a different researcher at the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions in Edinburgh. The first movement is a musical journey through the high-pressure phases of the element sulphur, the second envisages a journey to Saturn's moon Titan, while the third is an expressionistic representation of the structure of the substance CL20, the most explosive substance known to man. Misty Moonlight Waltz for violin, viola and cello (1977), was composed by Mark O’Connor and is featured on the Appalachian Journey album, recorded with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Misty Moonlight Waltz was initially a fiddle waltz Mark O’Connor composed as a 16-year old in Seattle Washington. He often performed his own waltz in fiddle contests he entered. In 1999 O’Connor arranged it for string trio and later adapted it to the violin, viola and cello combination. O’Connor often performs the piece in his Appalachia Waltz Trio concerts.

We Three Kings is a Christmas hymn John Henry Hopkins Jr. penned in 1857. It describes the journey of the Wise Men, also known as the Magi, to see the baby Jesus. The names of the kings passed down through tradition are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The number three in the title stems from the fact that there were three separate gifts given to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn was composed for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where Hopkins taught music. It was the first Christmas carol originating from the United States to achieve widespread popularity. The song is known for its lilting tune in triple meter and its distinctive contribution to the Christmas carol repertoire, with a narrative-ballad style and a straightforward, child-friendly narrative. The hymn was also included in The Oxford Book of Carols and has been recorded by various musicians in different music genres, including jazz, rock, and reggae.
