This Abba classic has a simple form with really fun vocal line solos for all the instruments and a great beat, which the cello and viola hold down for the majority of the song. This arrangement starts with an intro that uses homorhythmic material with tight harmonies that imitate the feel of the original Abba music video.  As the song launches into the first verse, the viola and cello team up playing the “Take a Chance� rhythmic figure, emulating the chanted words from the song, with the violin on melody. The viola takes the melody on the first half of the chorus, then hands it off to the cello which has a brief section in tenor clef. The song repeats and fades out on the chorus.  Bowings and rehearsal letters are included for ease of sight-reading, ideal for gigging performances. This version has been arranged a half step down (the original song was written in B Major, and I adjusted the key to B-flat Major so that it’s a bit friendlier to string players).

Take Me on is a classic, ultra catchy 80s tune that lends itself well to a string trio arrangement. The viola and cello both take the melody for a verse or two, with the violin handling the melody for the chorus. The violin and viola parts have a number of chords to help fill in the harmonies and make for a richer texture, resembling the sound of a string quartet more closely. The bridge section, (rehearsal E), is notated as performed in the original recording. The bridge has a bit of a psychedelic feel. If you feel your trio isn't up for the odd music of the bridge, it's easy to simply skip rehearsal E and cut right to letter F. The score and parts are well marked with bowings, measure numbers and rehearsal letters.

Also there are no specific bowings (accept for a down bow at the beginning of each movement). I will leave that to the discretion of the performers so they can decide what works best for their playing styles and technical possibilities (there is no need to follow slurs to the letter providing the slurred passages are smooth as I intend). One more thing is that the software I used doesn't make key changes as visible as I like so I have written a note to indicate said key changes. This collection is comprised of Oh Sing a Song of Bethlehem (KINGSFOLD), Veni, Veni Emmanuel, and Shepherd Serenade, arranged for intermediate String Trio (Violin, Viola, Cello). This arrangement of KINGSFOLD presents the melody with a chordal accompaniment pattern in the first verse. It then moves into a contrapuntal trio and finishes with a rousing third verse that returns to the chordal accompaniment pattern to end the arrangement. The haunting Advent carol, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, is arranged reflectively to encourage contemplation of the coming of the Christ Child. The prelude length medley, Shepherd Serenade, presents several songs centered around shepherds. It contains both Christmas and non-Christmas melodies (The Lord's My Shepherd (BROTHER JAMES' AIR), Rise Up, Shepherds and Follow (FOLLOW), The King of Love My Shepherd Is (ST COLUMBA), He Shall Feed His Flock from Handel's Messiah, and Who Is He in Yonder Stall).
