Composed by Matthew Scott Phillips. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 13 pages. Matthew Scott Phillips #3510885. Published by Matthew Scott Phillips (A0.1004149).

Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).

It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

We Three Kings is a Christmas hymn John Henry Hopkins Jr. penned in 1857. It describes the journey of the Wise Men, also known as the Magi, to see the baby Jesus. The names of the kings passed down through tradition are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The number three in the title stems from the fact that there were three separate gifts given to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn was composed for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where Hopkins taught music. It was the first Christmas carol originating from the United States to achieve widespread popularity. The song is known for its lilting tune in triple meter and its distinctive contribution to the Christmas carol repertoire, with a narrative-ballad style and a straightforward, child-friendly narrative. The hymn was also included in The Oxford Book of Carols and has been recorded by various musicians in different music genres, including jazz, rock, and reggae.

Composed by John Henry Hopkins Jr. Arranged by Sandy McIntire. Christmas,Holiday,Instructional,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 17 pages. Sandy McIntire #6527051. Published by Sandy McIntire (A0.697724).

We Three Kings, also known as The Quest of the Magi, was composed by Hopkins in 1857 for a Christmas pageant in New York City featuring three tenors each representing a king and singing a verse. This arrangement by McIntire for an Intermediate String Trio (Violin I and II and Cello) emphasizes the oriental origin of the Magi using modal variations of the tune. Each instrument is featured on a verse. Separate sheet music is provided for each instrument. The second violin part may be played on a viola.
Although appropriate year round, this carol is particularly appropriate for Epiphany or Theophany which commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child.

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christian,Christmas,Historic,Traditional. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #912690. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1324492).

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a well-known Christmas carol with exciting facts surrounding its creation and evolution. Here are some intriguing details about the song:

The original song was published as Hark, How All the Welkin Rings in the 1739 Wesley hymnal, Hymns and Sacred Poems. The second line, as written by Charles Wesley, read Glory to the King of kings, not Glory to the newborn King. The change from welkin to herald angels was made by George Whitfield, altering the meaning of Wesley's metaphor.

The tune we usually associate with Hark! The Herald was written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840 and was not intended as a sacred song. Mendelssohn wrote it to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of Gutenberg's printing press.

The song was initially intended to be sung to the same tune as Charles Wesley's Easter hymn, Christ the Lord Is Risen Today.

In 1855, British musician William Hayman Cummings adapted Mendelssohn's secular music to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Charles Wesley.

The hymn highlights the virgin birth, the universal application of the coming of the incarnate Deity to all nations, and the significance of Christ's birth in Bethlehem.

These facts shed light on the historical and musical significance of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, adding depth to its enduring popularity as a Christmas carol.
