The theme, shared amongst the instruments is introduced by all the violins and repeated by the first violins alone. The second violins rejoin them in bar9 before a question and answer dialogue between the first violins and other pairs of instruments with the lower strings reiterating the theme in bars 17 to 20. The whole orchestra answers in agreement. The middle section is slower and sadder in character as not all marches, nor conversations are triumphal in character. The voices appear to complement each other in commiseration before taking turns in leading the whole back to the more optimistic mood of the main theme ending in a positive shout.
