He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Apart from the collection of 'Classical Manuscripts' composed by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) and passed off by him as transcriptions of movements by old masters, the violonist published original works very early. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encore pieces, sweetening many a concert with such pieces of 'musical confectionary'. The most famous miniatures are undoubtedly 'Love's Joy' and 'Love's Sorrow', two 'old Viennese dance-tunes' in which Kreisler evoked the coffee-house atmosphere of his home town with wonderful melodies and beguiling harmonies. The miniatures are endearing, lively and catchy, yet with an elegiac air – but full of charm and elegance. These magnificent salon pieces are now available in an arrangement for string trio by Wolfgang Birtel.

Written for chamber orchestra in 1749 but not performed during his life, the Benedictus is part of what some call one of the greatest classical compositions. Here, the cello plays Bach's soprano melody line but in the tenor range. The viola (or violin) plays what was Bach's bass counterpoint in the alto range. And the soprano violin is given an entirely new melody in place of Bach's formerly straight alto harmony. Thus, three contrapuntal melody lines now weave dynamically between fore and background. Suitable for concerts, this arrangement is not recommended as sight reading for gigs, especially for the cello.
