String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1104123 Composed by Frank Zappa. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Jazz. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #707355. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1104123). Score: 3 pages. Duration: 2:24.Frank Zappa’s song “America Drinks and Goes Home†is a satirical take on the culture of American drinking habits. The song is from Zappa’s album Absolutely Free, which was released in 1967. In the song, Zappa uses his signature mix of tongue-in-cheek humor and biting social commentary to poke fun at the country’s binge-drinking culture. The song follows a group of bar-goers as they drink their way through the night, with each verse featuring a different character or set of characters. The characters range from a woman who “wants to dance until she drops†to a group of sailors who “just wanna get highâ€. Through his lyrics, Zappa paints a vivid picture of the nightlife scene in America, poking fun at the characters’ over-the-top behavior and lack of restraint. The song’s chorus repeats the phrase “America drinks and goes homeâ€, which serves as a commentary on the country’s tendency to consume alcohol in excess. The phrase also serves as a warning about the potential dangers of over-drinking. Despite its serious message, “America Drinks and Goes Home†is still an enjoyable listen. Its jazzy melody and upbeat tempo make it a perfect choice for any night out.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489096 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Holiday,Standards,Traditional. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #1065943. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1489096). Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (French: Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) is a traditional Christmas carol originating from the Provence region of France. The carol dates back to the 17th century. It is associated with the tradition of children in Provence dressing as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve while singing the carol. The Carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabella, who discover the baby Jesus in a stable and run to inform the villagers, urging them to come quietly not to disturb the sleeping child. The song's melody is believed to have originated as a lively dance tune from as early as the 14th century, and French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier later adapted it for a drinking song. The lyrics were first associated with this melody in a collection of French carols in 1901, transcribed by Julien Tiersot. Edward Cuthbert Nunn made the most popular English adaptation in the late 19th century. Despite its historical roots and charming melody, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is considered one of the lesser-known carols outside of France. Still, it remains a beloved part of Christmas celebrations in the Provence region.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489644 Composed by Welsh Traditional. Arranged by James M. .Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #1066516. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1489644). Deck the Halls is a traditional Christmas carol with a rich history and cultural significance:Origin and Melody: The melody of Deck the Halls is derived from a Welsh tune called Nos Galan, which dates back to at least the 16th century. The carol's melody was initially associated with Welsh New Year's Eve celebrations.Lyrics: The English lyrics were written by Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant in 1862. These lyrics were published alongside the original Welsh lyrics in a collection of Welsh melodies.Cultural Context: Originally, Nos Galan was a competitive Welsh drinking song. Participants would take turns singing verses around a fire during New Year's Eve gatherings. The transition from a New Year's song to a Christmas carol occurred when the English lyrics were adapted to focus on Christmas themes.Meaning and Usage: The phrase deck the halls means to decorate for Christmas, traditionally with boughs of holly and other festive adornments. The term deck in this context means to decorate or adorn, and it is derived from the Middle Dutch word dekken, meaning to cover.Variations and Adaptations: Over time, the lyrics have been adapted in various ways, including changing the words to reflect different cultural or religious contexts, such as replacing Christmas with Yule or Yuletide.Overall, Deck the Halls is a beloved carol that combines elements of Welsh tradition with Victorian-era English lyrics, celebrating the festive spirit of the holiday season.
