During his short lifetime Schubert composed prolifically in many genres.  His original composition of Marche Militaire was for 'four hands' or two Pianos, and all arrangements, including this one, usually present only the first part of the first of three marches that comprise the complete work (Trois Marches Militaire, Op.51).  Among the devices used by Schubert is clever decoration of the opening and closing unison phrases which are suggestive of a bugle call.

Bierley suggests that since the work was dedicated the the Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and composed for its Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment, that the title may refer to Myron M.
