This arrangement is 4 mins long and in B flat major. It is not the easiest of keys for strings but neither is it the hardest. It needs lots of vibrato, especially for the first violin, and subtlety from the inner parts to make sure they are heard but do not overpower the melody. The excerpt is from the instrumental section in which I exercised a little creativity! I would think players would need to be ABRSM Grade 7 to be able to play this well, but I could be wrong! I love the harmonic possibilities, especially the false relations in all of them!  Down the years I enjoyed singing this one in choral groups, and also sharing it with pupils in choirs. Included are various harmonisations of the wonderful tune, as well as some rhythmic surprises. They play it at a very fast speed, feeling it as one in a bar. Approx 140 bpm. However, I have also included a 30 second clip of some of the Sibelius Score at a much slower speed of 100 bpm. I think that the tempo is a matter of personal preference. The dissonance is more pronounced and beautiful at the slower speed, but the unexpected extra bars are more fun at a faster speed. At bar 68, the climactic section the cellist should be playing arco! There was  a mistake in the score and I have now corrected it! This is a good key for strings, and the double stopping always includes an open string. Although advanced players can make use of higher positions, younger players can use open strings which will not detract from this ancient style! I hope you enjoy playing this arrangement. I have included various harmonisations of the wonderful tune, and a short contrapuntal development section in the middle to add some interest. They play with lots of vibrato, few open strings, and slurred bows. That would be fine for Grade 5 players and above. However, open strings and one note per bow could still sound good, and the violin in the high positions could easily be played down an octave. All the double stopping includes an open string but could be divided between parts in a string orchestra. Appreciation for the quality and charm of Clara Schumann’s music has increased in recent years as it has become better known. She was the daughter and prize pupil of the celebrated piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, and she toured internationally by her early teens. Wieck also taught Robert Schumann, but bitterly opposed the liaison of Robert and Clara, aware that it would cause him to lose control of her career and the income it generated. The two were able to marry only after a long court battle with Wieck.In the 40 years that Clara survived Robert, she composed very little, devoting her energy to performance, and to securing Robert’s musical legacy. Nobody can blame her for this, especially as performing was a far more secure way to support her large family. But we can still regret that she did not compose more, given the excellence of the small body of work we have. This set includes arrangements of two piano pieces from her Opus 15, Vier flüchtige Stücke (Four Fleeting Pieces), and two Lieder for voice and piano from her Opus 13, Der Mond kommt still gegangen (The Moon Comes Quietly) and Liebeszauber (Love’s Spell). Yoel Epstein #4285845. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773330). These six songs have become icons of remembrance of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. They are traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. Shtiller Shtiller (Hush Hush) was written by Alexander Volkovitzky, then a 12-year-old boy, in the Vilna Ghetto in the spring of 1943. Volkovitzky, who wrote the melody for a song contest organized to encourage the cultural life of the ghetto, eventually came to Israel where he (under the name Alexander Tamir) became a leading pianist and music educator. The words are by Shmerke Kacserginsky, a leading poet of Vilna, who later escaped the Holocaust and migrated to South America. Papirossen (Cigarettes) actually predates the Holocaust by 15 years. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others.  Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune.  You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements.
