Gaudete! is Christmas carol, believed to originate from the 16th Century. It was published widely in 1582 in the collection of sacred songs known as Piae Cantiones. Whilst the plainchant for the refrain (Gaudete) is clearly published, there is much debate as to where the melody for the verses came from. To preserve the plainchant style of the verses, each member of the quartet has a solo verse – with a few alterations made to preserve each instrument’s unique voice. An additional refrain is included to create a suitable crescendo towards the climax of the piece – highlighting the meaning of Gaudete! (Rejoice!) This version is suitable for quartets of any level, especially those who desire an easily legible and flexible arrangement, ready for a Christmas concert, carol service, or other event. A favorite for St. Patrick's day or anytime time you want to enjoy a classic folk song. This arrangement begins with the cello playing the introduction, scored to sound like a tenor solo. The viola picks up the melody, in harmony with the second violin.  The first violin get the melody for the refrain - the most well-known part of the song. Enjoy! It really lends itself to a quartet or string orchestra arrangement as the original has a very prominent string presence throughout. The key is easy for strings and there are lots of straight and satisfying quaver sections. I gave the opening melody to the second violin this time! There are some double stopping moments in fifths, but many more with at least one of the pair being an open string. Bars 22 and 23 are quite syncopated and it may help classically trained musicians to have a listen to the original to get a ‘lazy’ feel to it rather than a more ‘literal’ rendition! At Bar 20, the cello solo could be played an octave lower. The first violin has the trickiest part, but the ending need not go up the octave. An increase in volume would sounded almost as exciting and would mean that younger players could easily tackle this arrangement.
