Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Famous for its appearance in the title credits of the Mexican novel Sin Rastro de Ti, this song by Carlos Rivera has been arranged by Luis for Nonamé on behalf of a groom to surprise his fiancée at their wedding. Romantic lyrics and romantic music, the viola starts the theme, that sounds through all the instruments, including the cello. In the first chorus the two violins echo each half-phrase, careful to match that. Also important viola solos at the end and an awkward little scale for violin 1 towards the end. All the instruments must respect, in the dynamics, the one who leads the singing voice all the time. All Nonamé arrangements are prepared to avoid page turns if they are printed with the covers correctly. Bowings and dynamics are enough in order to get a good sightreading.

Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749203). ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for singer and string quartet/string orchestra, I also have an arrangement for string quartet without the singer, where the first violinist has the vocal line. The Quartet version can be found on my 'Skinny Black Dogs' Youtube Channel by typing in 'Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You.'  The string parts in this version are almost identical to the quartet version but require fewer moments of double stopping as the singer carries the tune. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. My bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. It is important to stick to a strict tempo so that the singer can pull against the barline. Take a look at my Quartet version on Youtube, but bear in mind that this one is a lot easier for the first violin.

There are some tricky moments but it should be a lot of fun for an advanced quartet to learn.Approx: 3 mins.
