This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. Munich can be traced as far back as 1593 from Dresden, Germany.  In 1846, Felix Mendelssohn adapted this tune for the quartet Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord in the oratorio Elijah.  From that, other representations of this melody have developed, such as the hymn “O Word of God Incarnate.�

This piece was arranged for the ATLYS String Quartet to showcase talented and innovative women performers.  The ATLYS String Quartet is an all women chamber group world renown for their incorporation of modern performing techniques and programs music that is both “diverse and intriguing.�.

Abide With Me is a traditional hymn written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, and is most commonly set to the melody “Eventide� composed by William Henry Monk. The Bugatti-Step, it is called ragtime which was created by czech composer Jaroslav Ježek in 1931 for the piece Don Juan und Comp.. This exuberant, nimble music got its name from the Bugatti, the fastest automobile at the time, in which the famous Czech racing driver Eliška Junková solemnly defeated all her male colleagues at that time - just as in the upside-down incident in the play Poor Women Rush don Juan. My arrangement of this popular piece is transcribed for String Quartet.

Maddalena Casulana (1544-1590) was an accomplished vocalist, lutenist, and composer. Her first book of madrigals was published in Venice in 1568. It is possibly the first published book of any kind written by a woman. She dedicated this book to Isabella de Medici, “not only to give witness to my devotion to Your Excellency, but also to show to the world the foolish error of men who so greatly believe themselves to be the masters of high intellectual gifts that cannot, it seems to them, be equally common among women.”

Short study for string quartet and voices with a religious theme (in Spanish). The presence of God gives me strength in the hard days. 

Voices are flexible, located on Mezzo Soprano and Baritone, but not very demanding for other voices (in general could be seen as women and men). The string quartet can be played without voices and voices without the string quartet. On other than Spanish languages voices could use the ah sound. When having many singing, the quartet can be multiplied to have a small string orchestra.
