Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. 20th Century,Holiday,Instructional,Standards. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #3449751. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549061).

Gabriel Fauré: Sicilienne Op. 78. Nice recital encore piece. It is very moody with a light touch of impressionism and poignant mode mixture. This piece will add a surprising element to your concert and demonstrate the depth of your musical sensitivity.

Significant Aspects of Faure's Sicilienne
Gabriel Fauré's Sicilienne, Op. 78 is significant due to its history, influence, and musical characteristics.

Historical Significance
The piece was initially composed in 1893 as part of incidental music for a theatrical production that was later abandoned. Fauré reused the Sicilienne in 1898 when he wrote incidental music for the English translation of Maeterlinck's play Pelléas et Mélisande. This piece was later extracted and formed into an orchestral suite for concerts, known as the Pelléas et Mélisande Suite, Op. 80.

Influence and Popularity
Fauré's harmonic richness and melodic innovations in the Sicilienne exerted a powerful influence on other composers. The Sicilienne is the most famous piece from the Pelléas et Mélisande Suite and is frequently played by significant orchestras today.

Musical Characteristics
The piece is known for its conversational style for both cello and piano, and it exhibits chromatic movement to evoke a Renaissance aesthetic with the Sicilienne dance. It is also more complex than the typical song in terms of chords and melody, with above-average scores in chord and melodic complexity. In conclusion, Faure's Sicilienne is significant due to its historical background, influence on other composers, and unique musical characteristics.

Dance and Fabric
The term Sicilienne is derived from the French word Sicilienne, which means Sicilian. It is associated with a dance called the Siciliana and a kind of rich poplin fabric.

Musical Style
Sicilienne refers to a musical style or genre often included as a movement within more significant pieces of music, starting in the Baroque period. It is associated with a pastoral mood and is often characterized by dotted rhythms that can distinguish it within the broader musical genre of the pastorale.

Composed by Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Arranged by Artaria Editions. Classical. Score and parts. 142 pages. Artaria Editions #690260. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1086066).

For string quartet Score and parts Artaria Editions AE431 Edited by Allan Badley 142 pages This is a scholarly edition of a public domain work. The string quartet holds pride of place in Bologne de Saint-Georges instrumental works, with three sets of six works each. With neat but surely unintentional symmetry these quartets include his first and last instrumental works, the Six quatuors à cordes, Op.1, and the Six Quatuors concertans, Op.15. The present quartets fall midway between these two publications. Composed in 1777 (according to Gabriel Banat, the best and most recent of Saint-Georges’ biographers) the Six Quartetto concertans were issued two years later in a breathtakingly inaccurate edition by Durieu in Paris. Given the unusually high number of errors and inconsistencies in Durieu’s edition it seems most unlikely that Saint-Georges was involved in its preparation. No other edition of the quartets is known although a second printing of the set using the same plates was made ca 1782. Quartet I in Bb major Quartet II in G minor Quartet III in C major Quartet IV in F major Quartet V in G major Quartet VI in Bb major.

Composed by Mueller. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #3405927. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548635).

Away in a Manger arranged for string quartet with a re-harmonization for the final verse. Very easy to play and easy on the ear.

Away in a Manger is a popular Christmas song published in the late 19th century and performed worldwide. In England, it is considered one of the two most popular carols of all time; a 1996 poll ranked it as a tie for second place. To begin with, many thought Martin Luther wrote it, but now the song is considered American. The most common musical arrangements are by William Kirkpatrick (1895) and James R. Murray (1887). The melody was first published as Luther's Cradle Hymn by James R. Murray. Then came a confusing series of explanations about how Martin Luther wrote the song. Murray even went so far as to suggest that Luther wrote it for his children. As a result, the music has become known as Mueller. Nobody knows who this Mueller is, but the name stuck.

Popularity

By the 1880's the cradle song was being performed in church. By the 1990's the song was becoming the most popular Christmas song ever. Nearly everyone sang it in school, in church, and at home.

Other musical settings

The first musical setting published with the lyrics appeared in the Little Children's Book for Schools and Families (1885). The title was Away in a Manger. This edition is the first one not attributing the song to Martin Luther. Charles H. Gabriel was the first arranger to present the third verse. He also composed and published many different arrangements of the music. In one of his settings, he supplies a chorus for each verse with asleep sung in canon. Another prevalent preparation uses the lyrics to the melody Flow Gently, Sweet Afton. Yet another arrangement uses the songs to an old Normandy carol.
