Lyadov's music largely concerned the legends and folklore of olden Russia. This Christmas Carol from his Eight Russian Folk Songs, Op. 58, is a melody of the old tradition of  Kolyadki, or house-to-house caroling common among the Ukrainian people. Much like our modern tradition of Halloween, children would travel door-to-door singing songs of the season and would be invited in from the cold for some warm dumplings, pastries and tea.
