Glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, is a spiritual practice and a worship expression found in some streams of the Christian church, as well as in certain non-Christian religions. Glossolalia does not function only as a spoken word, but also in the context of music. Certain congregations practice glossolalia in group worship where the congregants join together in an improvisatory cascade of individual melodies that instinctively gravitate toward embellishments of a common chord (usually major). This practice sometimes leads to a spiritual trance and ecstasy.

A note from the composer: I composed First in Flight for vibraphone player Jason DeCristofaro who regularly performs classical music and jazz. This fast paced and energetic piece is full of colorful harmonic progressions, vibrant melodic lines, playful jazzy riffs, and dreamy soundscapes. If music can be compared to painting, this composition is an explosion of color. The title First In Flight is my nod toward North Carolina which has become my new home. Morgen!, No. 4 from Op. 27, is a beautiful love song originally for voice and piano, by Richard Strauss and text by John Henry Mackay. Strauss wrote this song along with the other three that precede it as a wedding present to his wife Pauline. The accompaniment has been rearranged several times over the years, and this works perfectly as a string quartet. It is well worth adding to your chamber repertoire for wedding preludes, ceremonies, and other intimate gigs.
