Their names are Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Alloter) and Atropos (the Inflexible). In the older myths, they were the daughters of Nyx, but later, they are more often portrayed as the offspring of Zeus and Themis. Here, they are depicted as three interludes in a short string quartet (Violin I & II, Viola, 'Cello).

The Merry Peasant was written by Schumann in 1848 when it was included in the first part of his ‘Album for the Young’ which was written for his three daughters. These comparatively easy pieces were intended to be played by children or by beginners. It is often now given the more contemporary title of The Happy Farmer which is used for this publication. The style and the major key evoke a sense of a rural worker returning from the fields at the end of the day in a good mood. The melody inspired the song Red Wing (1907) and it was used in the underscore of the film, The Wizard of Oz.

He was born in Ballywoollen, Down Northern Ireland in July of 1786 and worked as a farmer, a mason, and a boot maker. At the age of 27 he arrived in Orange  County, New York to look for land and decided to go back to Ireland to marry Jane Jean Martin.  In 1815 he immigrated to New York with his new wife and  bought a stone house with 60 acres. In 1858, he bought a farm in the Janesville Township of Wisconsin. He and his wife had nine children. His son, Samuel Cleland was my great great grandfather. He and his wife Mary Ann McCartney had eight daughters.The eldest was my great grandmother Helen Burnett Cleland.

I was totally blown away! Written by Sia Furler and Jesse Hatkin, it was nominated for four Grammys in 2014 and the music video is one of the most viewed Youtube videos ever posted! I have made a one minute video of this Voice and Quartet version of the song, plus the thirty second audio clip which features the introduction. My daughter, Alice Rose Wild, is singing the vocal part. This is one of my favourite arrangements and you can view a professional quartet play a live version of the Quartet but without the singer at my Youtube Channel, Helen Marple-Horvat Songwriter, Arranger, Composer, Capriccio Quartet, Chandelier.It is in a different key, and the first violin has the tune which entails more double stopping for the other players. Otherwise it is quite similar to the this version. The bowing is only a guide, so feel free to use lots of bow changes if it helps you to play it like a rock star!
