In the 1960s Paul McCartney's girlfriend Jane Asher got him interested in the music of Antonio Vivaldi. This led to the inspiration of having the accompaniment to Eleanor Rigby played by a string octet when the song was recorded for the Beatles' 1966 album Revolver. It was a sharp break, both in the music and the words, from the current conventions of pop music, and proved to be a milestone in the Beatles transformation from a pop/rock stage act to the experimental, recording-oriented band of their later years. This arrangement preserves the intimate, melancholy flavor of the original recording.

The Beatles released this song on the 1966 album Revolver and as a 45 rpm single. It was written by Paul McCartney, and credited to Lennon–McCartney. The song has a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin, which largely comprises parts for a single string quartet which are simply doubled for the most part. I have presented an arrangement here which is close to the original, but also incorporates the vocal melody in with the accompaniment, leading to a piece which will work well as a performance item in its own right. It is written using the same structure as the original, lasting a little over 2 minutes.
