Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Jane Melin. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Sacred. 7 pages. Jane Melin #954413. Published by Jane Melin (A0.1370038).

This hauntingly beautiful chorus from Rachmaninoff's Vespers is arranged for string quartet or ensemble. Ideal for intermediate-level musicians, with limited shifting to higher positions. Student ensembles can focus on tone, vibrato, dynamic contrasts, and listening to inner parts. Cathedral-quality sound when performed in a space with natural reverb.

By Barry Devorzon & Perry Botkin, Jr. By Barry Devorzon and Perry Botkin Jr. Arranged by Homco/Crinion. Film/TV,Multicultural,World. 10 pages. Homco/Crinion #1064486. Published by Homco/Crinion (A0.1487539).

Nadia's Theme was originally used as incidental music for the 1971 film Bless the Beasts and the Children but has come to be better known as the theme music for the TV soap opera The Young and the Restlass. The song was also associated with Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci during the 1976 Summer Olympics. It's a beautifully melancholic melody with a simplistic sincerity that can stir deep emotions. It is well-suited for strings, and in this String Quartet arrangement, each of the 4 instruments gets a chance to voice the melody.

String quartet - difficult - Digital Download

SKU: S9.Q778767

String Quartet No. 6. Composed by Joerg Widmann. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 27 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q778767. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q778767).

My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works ranging from the (in my opinion) quasi revolutionary Quartet No. 1 to the Quartet No. 5 entitled Versuch über die Fuge [Attempt at a Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6 – Study on Beethoven – composed fourteen years after No. 5 should be conceived as a new approach and the commencement of a new quartet cycle with an unknown ending. All that can be said is that the subsequent quartets will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Despite a reverence for Beethoven at a very early stage, my own compositions have steered well clear of this unapproachable cosmos with the exception of my concert overture Con brio. The perhaps only link with the five quartets of the first cycle of quartets is the single-movement structure of the thirty-minute Quartet No. 6. The fundamental coordinates have otherwise been reset to zero. This is therefore also a ‘study’ in a literal sense. In the Quartet No. 6, I set out with a state of tonality displaying significant extensions whose centrifugal forces are barely containable. My focus is the detection of the inherent gravitation of tonality, including phenomenons such as tension/relaxation, suspension/resolution and fixation/deviation. From a formal aspect, the work is too experimental and unsentimental for explorations in a nostalgic-romantic sense. On the contrary, tonality or at least its fundamental assumptions are initially set down in the sense of a study or test assembly in order to permit subsequent experimentation, variation and the formulation of exceptions with the desire and firm conviction that it is possible to express something innovative and never previously heard with this seemingly exhausted fundamental material. I have been repeatedly astonished by the unfolding in the progression of this piece which has taken me to unknown locations, especially from a formal aspect. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. The Quartet No. 6 has been created in close artistic and friendly cooperation with Anne-Sophie Mutter and she is the dedicatee of this work. Jörg Widmann, July 2019

Composed by Colin Eatock. 20th Century,21st Century,Chamber,Classical. 62 pages. Colin Eatock Music #918355. Published by Colin Eatock Music (A0.1330583).

Four movements; soprano, string quartet; ca. 12 min.

The composer writes: Rabindranath Tagore’s Song Offerings are the poet’s own English-language translations of his Bengali-language Gitanjali. While Tagore’s translations are not exactly literal, they present to the Western world a window into the tradition of Hindu devotional poetry. (Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize for literature for the collection.)

The four excerpts I have chosen to set to music, love and beauty are recurring themes, richly elaborated with images from nature. But as with many of the poems in Gitanjali: Song Offerings, the “love†and “beauty†can be interpreted as either worldly or spiritual.

SKU: A0.1511369

Composed by Clara Wieck-Schumann. Arranged by Stephen Levintow. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 32 pages. Cypress Publishing #1086543. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1511369).

Appreciation for the quality and charm of Clara Schumann’s music has increased in recent years as it has become better known. She was the daughter and prize pupil of the celebrated piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, and she toured internationally by her early teens. Wieck also taught Robert Schumann, but bitterly opposed the liaison of Robert and Clara, aware that it would cause him to lose control of her career and the income it generated. The two were able to marry only after a long court battle with Wieck.

In the 40 years that Clara survived Robert, she composed very little, devoting her energy to performance, and to securing Robert’s musical legacy. Nobody can blame her for this, especially as performing was a far more secure way to support her large family. But we can still regret that she did not compose more, given the excellence of the small body of work we have.

This set includes arrangements of two piano pieces from her Opus 15, Vier flüchtige Stücke (Four Fleeting Pieces), and two Lieder for voice and piano from her Opus 13, Der Mond kommt still gegangen (The Moon Comes Quietly) and Liebeszauber (Love’s Spell). Clara’s musical forms are generally more conventional than Robert’s, but she is capable of bold harmonies and modulations, often in the middle sections of her piano pieces. Opus 15, No. 3, the third of this set, is an example, with some rhythmic challenges to the quartet.

Cypress Publishing offers other works by Clara Schumann arranged for string quartet under “Two Pieces by Clara Schumann” (from Op. 15 and Op. 21), and her wonderful song Liebst du um Schönheit (If You Love for Beauty), paired with Robert’s great Mondnacht (Moonlit Night) as “Two Songs by the Schumanns”.

CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites.

The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.
