Charles Gounod composed his Ave Maria adding his new vocal line over Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier. This version (in G major) is for string quartet alone. A vocalist can be added, as the first violin part doubles Gounod's original vocal line. This divides Bach's original arpeggios between the viola and second violin. These two parts are modestly difficult. Fingerings have been provided for the more awkward arpeggios. Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century.  It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections.  Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama.  It ends as plaintively as it begins.

The markups and articulations are consistent with the original.  The difficulty is comparable to the original symphony.Generally the first quartet has most of the original woodwind parts and some of the brass. The second quartet has most of the original string parts and some of the brass. This works best when there is some contrast between the two groups, so ideally Violins 1 and 2 will be physically separated from Violins 3 and 4 on the stage (similarly for the other instruments).This is perfect for the featured work on a chamber music concert. I have included various harmonisations of the wonderful tune, and a short contrapuntal development section in the middle to add some interest. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, The Angel Gabriel. They play with lots of vibrato, few open strings, and slurred bows. That would be fine for Grade 5 players and above. However, open strings and one note per bow could still sound good, and the violin in the high positions could easily be played down an octave. All the double stopping includes an open string but could be divided between parts in a string orchestra.
