Published by Jeremy Crosmer (A0.839102). Ignatius Sancho is thought to be the first person of African origin to vote in Britain. He was born on a slave ship sailing to the Caribbean, and became an orphan soon after. While he was a slave, his intellect impressed the Duke of Montagu, who lent him access his library. He ran away at age 18 to the Montagu house, where he developed his skills in music, poetry, reading and writing, eventually becoming a prominent abolitionist. By 1774 he was able to open his own grocery shop in London, and owning property allowed him to vote. The 12 Country Dances were written in 1779, shortly before his death, and dedicated to Miss North. The dances were performed in line-dance formation, and the original score includes instructions. The Violin 1 part follows Paul's singing line, while the Violin 2 and Cello parts imitate the moving guitar lines. While the Viola provides some of the rhythmic movement originally provided by the fingerpicking style of the guitar, it is quite repetitive, so I have also included both Violin III as Viola in treble clef AND a viola part as Violin II in Alto clef, in the possibility that these inner voices would prefer to swap parts, and to prove that I don't want the violas to always play the boring bits (love to the violas!). It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for string quartet, I also have an arrangement on Sheet Music Plus, for female singer and string quartet backing. The Quartet version can be found on my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel, by typing in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You’. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune! Hope you enjoy playing this song! It was a lot of fun to arrange!
