It is often considered to be the first recorded bossa nova song. The music was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and the lyrics were written by Vinícius de Moraes. João Gilberto's recording is the most famous.The song was first recorded in 1957 by Brazilian singer Elizete Cardoso and released on her 1958 album entitled Canção Do Amor Demais; however, the public took little notice of her release. João Gilberto included the second recorded version of the track in 1958. Released as a single, the song became a hit and would solidify bossa nova as a permanent genre in the Latin music lexicon. The song also appeared on Gilberto's first album Chega De Saudade.The title can be translated roughly as enough longing, though the Portuguese word, saudade, carries with it a far more complex meaning. The first movement is light and airy, almost evoking the image of a late romantic drawing room. The 2nd movement is slow and sad, evoking the sense of a maiden weeping for a lost love. This movement needs to be played with a lot of passion and all parts need to use their warmest vibrato. The final movement portrays a laughing, glittery ball. Dancers in evening dress whirl around the dance floor. The cello has a leading role. This was originally written in 2005 and added to over the next two or three years. I'm currently working on my second quartet.

I chose to explore the effect of instrumentation within the piece as I felt that a string quartet is such a varied ensemble with regards to both tone and character, and hence I would argue that pieces composed for this famous ensemble should reflect this in their nature. The piece reflects these compositional aims, with varying stylistic qualities and timbres found throughout.
