A Sky Full of Stars is a song by the British rock band Coldplay. It was released in May 2014 as the second single from their sixth album, Ghost Stories (2014). An exclusive digital EP version of it, with the B-sides All Your Friends, Ghost Story and O (Reprise), came out in the following weeks, being considered the band's eleventh extended play.

The band co-wrote and co-produced the song with Avicii and received production assistance from Paul Epworth, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson. It was recorded at the Bakery and the Beehive in North London, England. Upon its release, A Sky Full of Stars garnered mostly positive reviews from music critics and charted inside the top 10 in over 16 countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States.

A music video for the song was directed by Mat Whitecross and was released on 19 June 2014. The single peaked at number one in Italy, Israel, Luxembourg, Portugal, Lebanon, and the Walloon region of Belgium. It also topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. A happy and fun string quartet arrangement, approximately Grade 4, of a popular early-American Christmas carol originating in England, with sources placing it at various dates and locales. Given the cultural setting, and given the popularity of country dances, no doubt at least the children danced to this tune.

The carol is also known by the name The First Good Thing That Mary Had, which is the first line of text.

PDF contains the full score, individual parts, and a piano reduction provided to give a quick idea of what the arrangement sounds like. The number of verses varies, but one thing is for certain. It's purpose was to teach the story of the Virgin Mary from the birth of Jesus until His glorification in heaven. There are at least seven verses, each one telling Mary's experiences through the life of Christ. No doubt this was used to teach children and others who did not have or could not read the Scriptures.

I met members of the Nico Quartet (Minami Yoshida, Alison Kim, Chih-Ta Chen and Deok Yong Kim) when I hired them to be part of the instrumental ensemble for a recording session of my Missa Pro Defunctis in the Eben Jordan Studio at the New England Conservatory of Music in the spring of 2019.

On a later occasion that spring I heard their cellist Deok Jong Kim as the soloist in the Shostakovich Cello Concerto wit the NEC Philharmonic in Jordan Hal.  I was blown away by her impeccable and lyrical performance.

A month later I saw the Nico Quartet in a Jordan Hall recital as one of the Honors Ensembles at NEC 2019.  This time I was blown away by all four members of the group.

Right there and then I decided that I should write a string quartet for them.  This is my 13th string quartet.  Three more and I will catch to Beethoven.   LOL!!!

This Alman was originally written for lute. The Alman was part of the dances of Renaissance Suites that later occurs in the Baroque Period. Robert Johnson was a master lutenist during the Renaissance England. The beautiful 16th Century counterpoint is ewvident in his writing. Robert Johnson was the son of John Johnson, who was lutenist to Elizabeth I. In 1594 Robert's father died, and in 1596 he joined the household of George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon as an apprentice. Robert is assumed to have been around 13 at the time, as this was a typical age to begin an apprenticeship, but his date of birth is not known. Carey and his wife Elizabeth Spencer, were patrons of the lutenist and composer John Dowland, who dedicated various compositions to them. Considered by the composer to be among his very finest chamber music works to date, this piece performed by the Boston Composers String Quartet at the New England Conservatory of Music in Jordan Hall, Boston, January 29, 1989, and in Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York City, February 12, 1989. The music is unabashedly 12-tone, but is also very lyrical much of the time. The climax of the piece is quite is triad/trichord-based and tonal-sounding. The biggest influence on the piece formally is Schoenberg's String Trio. Duration: 18:00.
