By Adam Levine & Tony Lucca, Boyz II Men, En Vogue, and The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Jeff Perholtz. Rock. Score and parts. 7 pages. Published by Fab Forward Entertainment (A0.498087).

The Beatles -Yesterday (String Quartet) This arrangement will allow you to perform the song as it was originally recorded, accompanying an acoustic guitar/vocalist. A lot of research went into ensuring that this arrangement is as accurate to the original work as possible. There are many pictures online of George Martin's original score. In an interview with his son Giles (see Youtube link), Martin indicated that he and McCartney made several changes to the original. For example, McCartney added the following: M35 the Cello run to Eb; M44-M48 the high A on Violin I. When isolating the string section by soloing the left channel of the original recording, one can clearly hear several additional changes, such as the addition of double stops and inversions throughout the song. For example, Violin I goes to E in M11; Violin I & II hold the 3rd note of the harmony in M37. The end result of these changes is a masterpiece that undoubtedly one of the most successful recordings of all time.

Frank Zappa's Brown Shoes Don't Make It is a classic rock song from his 1967 album Absolutely Free. The song is an example of Zappa's trademark satirical lyrics and complex musical composition. The lyrics take aim at materialistic and superficial values in American society, with Zappa's darkly humorous delivery and colorful imagery. Musically, the song combines a range of styles including psychedelic rock, avant-garde jazz, and funk. The instrumentation includes Zappa's trademark electric guitar, as well as vibraphone, organ, and percussion. The song's arrangement is also noteworthy for its use of extended instrumental passages and multiple tempo changes. Brown Shoes Don't Make It is a prime example of Zappa's experimental and iconoclastic approach to rock music, and remains a favorite of fans and critics alike.

Frank Zappa was an American musician, composer, and filmmaker. He was known for his unconventional and often controversial style of music, as well as his social and political commentary. Zappa was a prolific composer and performer, and his works span multiple genres, including rock, jazz, classical, and avant-garde. He also wrote and directed films, wrote screenplays, and designed album covers. Zappa is often cited as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, and his music continues to be revered by fans around the world. His song Oh No is an example of his unique and quirky approach to music, combining elements of jazz, funk, and rock with a humorous and irreverent attitude. The song is a parody of the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations, and its lyrics express Zappa's disdain for the commercialization of music. The song is a classic example of Zappa's irreverent and offbeat sense of humor, and it remains a fan favorite to this day.

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Joshua S. Kim. Children,Classical,Concert,World. Score and parts. 7 pages. Joshua S. Kim #3628305. Published by Joshua S. Kim (A0.836074).

This arrangement is for small string ensemble with violin solo. Instead of violin solo, violins I might play its part; then the part of violins will change to that of violins II.
String quartet can also benefit from this arrangement.

According to Eugen d'Albert (1864 - 1932), the Bagatelles of Opus 119 form excellent examples of the master's work of the last period. As for Bagatelle No. 5, he suggests Alla Siciliana would be an appropriate title.

For a Synagogue In Pittsburgh, In C Minor will touch your heart.

Dedicated to the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue tragedy of 2018, this mood piece is best suited for Jewish religious events; however, because it is an instrumental, it also is effective as a prelude piece for Christian liturgical services. A piano solo version of this was performed Oct. 27, 2019, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, by the music collective Sacred & Secular before the start of the service. One congregation member, who also is a member of Sacred & Secular, was moved to tears.

In terms of technical proficiency, For a Synagogue In Pittsburgh is an excellent fit for intermediate students/players and would fit best in recitals and/or concerts that include two or three other introspective-sounding pieces. More famous examples would include Debussy's Clair de Lune and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Plans are underway to expand this ensemble arrangement (string quartet, offered with score and parts) to include an SATB vocal arrangement and make it available on Mo-Mutt Music's Sheet Music Plus page.

Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Holiday,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3448703. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549055).

Schubert's Moment Musicaux is a collection of six short pieces for solo piano composed by Franz Schubert. They are among the most frequently played of Schubert's piano music and have been recorded many times. The Moments Musicaux are supreme examples of Schubert's ability to suggest the subtlest nuances of emotion, which shift and alter literally in a moment. The composition of the Moments was quite sporadic, with the third and sixth movements appearing in various collections of works compiled by publishers in 1823/24 and the complete collection appearing in 1828, the year of Schubert's death. The Moments Musicaux are short pieces, shorter than his Impromptus, and are collected under the opus number 94. They encompass various moods and moderate difficulty, showcasing Schubert's skill in touching different tonal areas within a single movement. Schubert's Moment Musicaux No. 3 is a significant and widespread piece. It is described as energetic, playful, and lyrical. The Moments Musicaux are among Schubert's best-loved works, and No. 3 is known for its whimsical merriment.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Klas Krantz. Classical,Folk. Score and parts. 7 pages. Amadeus Music #2027379. Published by Amadeus Music (A0.530945).

The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious, as no other collector of folk tunes encountered it, and all known examples are descended from Ms. Ross’ submission to Petrie’s collection (1855). The title of the air comes from the name of the county located in Northern Ireland. The air was collected by Jane Ross of Limavady, County Londonderry, who heard it played by an itinerant piper or fiddler. The descendants of blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry assert that he is the musician from whom she transcribed the tune but there is no historical evidence to support this speculation. The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Londonderry. This led to the descriptive title Londonderry Air being used for the piece

1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

Composed by Mike Strand. Contemporary,Jazz,World. Score and parts. 36 pages. Michael M. Strand #4837117. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970731).

By Mike Strand, ASCAP

I wrote this String Quartet in a composition class at the College of William and Mary in 2010.  It is brief and rich with variety, and it involves a technique of mine called fracturing (see note* below).  This causes the dissonance you'll hear in parts of this work.

On one occasion, when I felt stressed, I enjoyed listening to Morton Feldman's String Quartet II (1983), which lasts about 6 hours.  This quiet but lovely music soothed and pacified me.

On the other hand, if you want something to energize and alert you in less than 11 minutes, this quartet may be for you --  whenever you acquire a recording of it by some lucky quartet ensemble.  Have a cup of coffee with it, for insurance!

In the meantime, enjoy the audio sample, Movement I of my quartet.  This alone may suffice to get you going, in only two and a half minutes.

String Quartet - William and Mary:   Four movements, total time 10:45:

I. Allegro moderato (2:32)

A tango-like dance movement: Preface, Introduction, A, B, A’, C, Coda (two variations).

II. Lento (2:44)

Counting to twenty in 5-4, 4-4, and 12-8 time. 5-4 time predominates (five groups of four measures each), then 4-4 (two groups of five measures each) and 12-8 (one group of five measures). Throughout there are 72 counts per minute, with quarter notes counted in the 5-4 and 4-4 time signatures, and with dotted quarter notes counted in the 12-8 time signature. The five measures of 12-8 also introduce the theme for movement III.

Fun with three different time signatures!

III. Allegro (2:11)

Variations on a Scottish-like folk tune and fragments of it. One variation is an example of tonal pointillism. The closing measures are an extended coda based on a transformed version of the original tune.

IV. Swing (3:18)

West Coast swing tempo for the Introduction and Part A; triple swing tempo for Part B.

 Note* on the fracturing technique

This is my method to produce systematically new types of dissonance and corresponding modifications and resolutions. Fracturing consists of changing pitches in a melody or chord as follows:

(a) Decide on the root note position within the staff or line of music.

(b) Represent the applicable chord in half-step notation, with the root given the value 0.

(c) Alternatively subtract and add a prescribed number of half steps from, and to, each successive number in the annotated chord (except for the root).

(d) Use the new fractured annotation to define the new pitches. The actual or implied root of the chord (tonal center) remains unchanged. The resulting new chord or melody is thus related or resolvable to the parent tonal harmony or chord.

Fracturing appears mainly in the first and third movements, with spare use in the second and fourth movements.

Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Laura Chegwidden. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Wedding. 40 pages. Laura Chegwidden #3468130. Published by Laura Chegwidden (A0.812099).

Handel wrote 3 suites of Water Music, of which the D major suite is the second. It contains the famous Alla Hornpipe in D, along with four other movements, including a Minuet, Lentement and Bourree, along with one unlabelled movement. It is a fantastic example of a Baroque Orchestra suite written by one of the Masters of Baroque Music and is ideal for events like weddings, school concerts or functions. It functions easily both as a concert piece and background music for events like wedding receptions.

The arrangement goes for approx. 6 min not including repeats. This purchase includes a score and parts for all performers; violin 1, violin 2, and cello. It would work best for players of an intermediate to advanced level. It is set in the key of D major, which is the original key that the suite was written in.

Laura Chegwidden is a pianist, cellist, double bassist and singer from Newcastle Australia. She recently graduated with distinction  from the University of Newcastle with a B.MUS majoring in Cello and Composition. Composed by William Billings. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Traditional. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #1078394. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1502724).

William Billings' hymn Africa is a notable composition in early American music history. Here are some key points about its significance:

Musical Characteristics
Africa is one of Billings' most ecstatic and stirring hymns. It showcases his distinctive style of four-part choral writing, typically performed as a cappella. The piece likely features Billings' characteristic use of forceful harmonies and elaborate fugal sections.

Historical Context
As part of Billings' repertoire, Africa represents an important milestone in American musical development: It was composed during the late 18th century when Billings established himself as America's first professional composer. The hymn was likely included in one of Billings' published collections, such as The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) or The Singing Master's Assistant (1776).

Cultural Impact
Africa contributed to Billings' reputation as a pioneering figure in American music, helping popularize his work throughout the Northern and Middle States.
The hymn was likely performed in church choirs and singing schools, critical cultural institutions of the time. As part of Billings' body of work, Africa played a role in establishing a distinctly American musical tradition separate from European influences.

Enduring Legacy
While Billings' popularity waned during his lifetime, his music, including Africa, has experienced a revival: It remains part of the repertoire performed by American choral groups, particularly those specializing in early music. Africa is listed among Billings' notable works in modern references, indicating its continued recognition. Africa stands as an example of Billings' innovative and influential contributions to early American sacred music.
