String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550016 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Holiday,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. 72 pages. Jmsgu3 #4574631. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550016). The Hebrides Overture, also known as Fingal's Cave, is a concert overture composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830, revised in 1832, and published the following year as Mendelssohn's Op. 26. It is a standalone composition in a form familiar to the Romantic period and is not drawn from a stage work or opera. The overture consists of two primary themes, with the opening notes stating the theme Mendelssohn wrote while visiting Fingal's Cave and the second theme depicting movement at sea and rolling waves.Mendelssohn was inspired to compose this piece after visiting the Scottish island of Staffa and its famous Fingal’s Cave, which made a deep impression on him due to its echoing acoustics and the sound of waves crashing against rocks. The intense and rolling melodies within the music perfectly capture the sense of drama and awe of the Scottish landscape. The Hebrides Overture, also known as Fingal's Cave, has been used in popular culture in various ways. It has been performed by orchestras worldwide and has become part of the standard orchestral repertoire, retaining its position to the present day. The overture has also inspired literary works like Virginia Woolf's novel. Additionally, Mendelssohn's visit to the Hebrides and the composition of the overture have contributed to the popularity of Fingal's Cave as a tourist destination. Furthermore, the overture has been featured in recordings and concerts, contributing to its enduring presence in the musical landscape.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1353485 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 36 pages. Jmsgu3 #938223. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1353485). The Significance of Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, lies in its role in developing the organ repertoire and reflecting Mendelssohn's compositional style. The work, written in 1837, consists of three preludes and fugues for organ. Here are some critical aspects of its significance: Mendelssohn's compositional style: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, showcase Mendelssohn's unique style, characterized by a combination of Romantic expressiveness and Classical form. This style is evident in the structure, harmony, and melodic content.  Influence of J.S. Bach: Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are heavily influenced by the style of J.S. Bach, a composer Mendelssohn greatly admired. This influence can be seen in the pieces' counterpoint, harmonic language, and formal structure. Pedal technique: In Op. 37, Mendelssohn composed independent pedal parts that reveal a thorough understanding of the role of the pedals in organ music. For the first time, he composed pedal passages that required more than minimal competency, demonstrating his skill in writing for the organ. Expansion of the organ repertoire: Mendelssohn was an accomplished organist and wrote dozens of works for the instrument. The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, contribute to expanding the organ repertoire and demonstrate Mendelssohn's mastery of the medium. Historical context: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, were written when Mendelssohn was also working on his Six Sonatas, Op. 65. This period of productivity and exploration of the organ medium further highlights the significance of Op. 37 in Mendelssohn's compositional output. In summary, Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are significant to music history due to their reflection of Mendelssohn's compositional style, influence by J.S. Bach, innovative pedal technique, contribution to the organ repertoire, and historical context within Mendelssohn's compositional output.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.749754 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Stephen M. Taylor. Classical,Concert,Instructional,Wedding. Score and parts. 44 pages. SMT Music #5971157. Published by SMT Music (A0.749754). Mendelssohn was a musical genius and it's obvious when you consider he penned this astounding composition by the age of 16. He wrote the octet as a birthday gift for his friend and violin teacher Eduard Rietz who was 23 at the time. This arrangement makes it possible for a string quartet to play the 1st movement. It's not always easy to get eight accomplished string players to sit down and read through music and this might make it more accessible and practical to play. The 1st violin part is the same as it was penned by Mendelssohn. The other parts are condensed. It takes some practicing even to read the music as it's somewhat difficult. And since the parts are condensed it's difficult to manuever page turns. I'll leave that up to the players. Still, it's fun to play and can be performed if you can work out the page turns.Probably work great on an I pad for that. I'm old school so my generation does cutting and pasting as needed ! Have fun. Great for parties, background music, wedding reception and general string quartet gigs.. .

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548729 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3412115. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548729). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther. The first verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms. Score: 4 pg. parts: 1 pg. Bowings included. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics which are essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed compositions, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

Soprano voice and string quartet - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q48897 Six Lieder by Theodor Kirchner. Composed by Aribert Reimann. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, score and parts. Duration 23 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q48897. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q48897). German.Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) began composing at a very early age, initially receiving great support from Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann and subsequently from Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Even his Lieder op. 1 already display a clear formal structure, the concentration of tonal material within a limited space and rhythmic variability. I have selected six lieder based on poems by Heinrich Heine originating from different periods of Kirchner’s life and interleaved them between seven bagatelles which make selective references to the previous or next lied, sometimes as a single note, a chord or a gesture. The Sieben Bagatellen can additionally be performed separately, independently of the complete cycle. (Aribert Reimann).
