The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded. Film and other adaptations have also been made. Vilia is one of the most beloved of all romantic songs from the vast library of Viennese operetta. Franz Lear's famous Gold and Silver Waltz is here arranged for string quartet by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.) Care has been taken to arrange page turns at suitable places (with a note in the parts when a page turn occurs in another player's part). Lehár wrote his Gold and Silver Waltz at the request of the socialite, fashion trend-setter and arts patron (of Wagner and Smetana, among others) Princess Pauline von Metternich for the eponymous ball she gave at Vienna’s Sophiensäle on January 27, 1902. She asked for “something especially fine� and was rewarded with one of the masterworks of the twilight years of the Viennese waltz.

This piece is quite long (6.31) but it can be made shorter by omitting the repeats (4.54) or just using the main waltz themes without repeats (2.30) by starting one beat before letter A and finishing at the bar before letter G.

Gold and Silver waltz was composed by Franz Lehar (1870-1948) for Princess Pauline von Metternich’s “Gold and Silver� Ball in January 1902. It has been made popular in recent times by André Rieu and his orchestra.
