The third movement of the Piano Sonata No. 12 in A-flat Major, Op.26, Beethoven’s “Funeral March No. 2� is played at state funerals in the UK, including the funerals of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The subtitle of this movement (“Marcia Funebre, sulla morte d'un Eroe�) translates to “Funeral March, relating to the death of a hero�, and was orchestrated by Beethoven for the incidental music to Johann Duncker's play “Leonore Prohaska� (WoO 96). This was one of the pieces played during the procession at Beethoven’s funeral in 1827.

I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces poular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second violin and viola after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Violin. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

Kleiner Trauermarsch (Little Funeral March) in C minor, K. 453a is a keyboard work composed in 1784 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, written in the notebook of his student Barbara Ployer.

The piece is also sub titled Marche funebre del Sigr Maestro Contrappunto (Funeral March for Mr. Master/Maestro Counterpoint). It was dedicated to Barbara Ployer.

It was first published in 1930. The autograph was thought to have been lost in 1945.

Mozart was Ployer's teacher, so the sub title would seem to be another musical joke about himself.

Is is quite short.

This arrangement is faithful to the original song, transposed up a semitone. It begins with the melody in the viola, moving to the first violin for subsequent verses.
