By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Austin Ralphson. 20th Century,Contemporary,Pop,Rock. 26 pages. Austin Ralphson #997999. Published by Austin Ralphson (A0.1416316).

Arguably one of the most loved and timeless songs ever recorded, this piece of music was a true collaboration between Lennon and McCartney in 1967. This arrangement keeps the emotion of the origianl intact whilst also adding additional touches, often influenced by the drum rhythms of Ringo Starr.

The famous 40-second fade out on the final chord is NOT in this arrangement - it simply holds the final note as a pause - but feel free to make that pause 40 seconds long should you so desire!

By Beyonce. By (Beyonce Knowles), (Megan Buelow), Beyonc Knowles, Brian Bates, Elizabeth Boland, Megan Blow, Nathan Ferraro, and Raphael Saadiq. Arranged by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee. Contemporary,Country,Pop,Wedding. 26 pages. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #1064153. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.1487182).

Special thanks to Sienna String Quartet for their amazing recording of this arrangement!

Beyonc's surprise release of her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, took the world by storm -- and as one of the album's lead singles, Texas Hold 'Em became an overnight sensation! With its powerful vocal performance, authentic sound, and homage to fellow Black artists in country music, the song quickly topped the Billboard charts in America and around the world...but not only that, it also topped the Hot Country Songs chart, giving Beyonc the first-ever number one country song by a Black woman! So it goes without saying that this barrier-breaking song would be a popular addition to your gig books! This Cellobat arrangement for your string quartet maintains the soaring melodies, lush layers of vocal harmonies, and laid-back country groove of the original for a chart you and your audience are sure to love. Rated advanced-intermediate for some tricky syncopated rhythms throughout; this will be learnable for more advanced students and sightreadable for professionals.

By Ray LaMontagne. By Ray LaMontagne. Arranged by Adam Overacker for String Love. 20th Century,Pop,Rock,Singer/Songwriter,Wedding. 21 pages. String Love #806388. Published by String Love (A0.1208286).

String Quartet arrangement of You Are The Best Thing, the 2008 hit from Ray LaMontagne.  It's catchy and dancy and a perfect recessional song.

Arranged by Adam Overacker for String Love string quartet, this instant classic is Ray’s top song on Spotify with over 165,000,000 streams!  It’s been a constant on our playlists for preludes, cocktail hours, and ceremonies for many years.  It’s got a singable and recognizable melody, but it’s also got an infectious rhythm that is both fun to listen to and fun to play.

The song is from Ray’s album Gossip in the Grain, an album that Pop Matters calls the artist’s most cohesive, career-defining album to date.” Billboard also loved the album, saying While there's not a bad song in the bunch, once you've heard LaMontagne loosen up, you're left starving for more of it.” You Are The Best Thing has been covered by numerous artists and has appeared in movies and tv shows including I Love You, Man, Bad Moms, and American Idol.

If you’d like a version without chord changes or ossia’s just get a hold of us on our website, we’d be happy to provide that for you.  Same with violin 3 / viola tc. Be sure to check out our other arrangements as well!

By Heidi Savoie. By Heidi Savoie. Arranged by Heidi Savoie. Classical,Contemporary,Jazz,Pop,Singer/Songwriter. 15 pages. Heidi Savoie #960865. Published by Heidi Savoie (A0.1376321).

This score is an arrangement for piano, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass with optional drums.

Backstory:
Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost May”. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May” unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover.

What to listen for: Theme

The main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings.

What to listen for: Variation I
The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur.

What to listen for: Variation II

The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

I would like to thank Cole Canaday for the nuance, imagination and depth of understanding with which he brought this piece to life. I would also like to thank Blake Hamilton and Anastace for providing invaluable audio engineering feedback.

String Quartet(1983)

String Quartet is divided into four movements (sections): I. Allegro con brio, II. Dichterisches Adagio, III. Andante cantabile, IV. Lebendiges Finale. The composer designed this piece to play continuously between sections and makes the composition a quasi-single-movement. Due to the continuity, the musical elements and compositional concepts are connected smoothly through out the piece.

The vigorous pizzicato opens up the first movement of this piece, imitates the traditional Chinese Gong-and-Drum rhythmic patterns. The cello solo main theme flows in later and develop the music to the following sections. The second movement is inspired from the concept of poetry reading. It is the most intensive section and holds the greatest contrast of this piece. The third movement combines elements from the earlier movments and leads to the fourth movement, Lebendiges Finale. The musical ideas between these four movments of the composition are strongly revelent to each other.

The musical content in a composition sets up the style for itself. Even under some restrictions of tradional musical forms, the composer tried to develop few new compositional ideas in order to achieve a new sphere of string quartet with this piece.

String Quartet was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, finished in 1983, premiered on 4th of January 1985 in the National Taiwan University Student Activity Center. It was programed in the event A Night of Shui-Long Ma’s Chamber Music, held by Asian Composers’ League-Taiwan Section and NTU-Philharmonic Club. The premiered musicians were: Wei-Chung Chiang (Violin I), Chin-Kuei Hong (Violin II), Ming-Li Wu (Viola) and Wan-Ling Sun (Cello).

The first edition of the score was published in 1987, and the second edition published in 2016.

By Miley Cyrus. By Henry Walter, Lukasz Gottwald, Maureen McDonald, Sacha Skarbek, and Stephan Richard Moccio. Arranged by Kyle Pudenz. Contemporary,Pop. Score and parts. 34 pages. ViolinVagabond Music #5310843. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845973).

Why settle for a bland transcription of Hannah Montana when you can have an action-packed, thrill-filled arrangement that's ALMOST as crazy as Miley Cyrus!? (almost)

You've heard the song. You've seen the video. Whether or not you're a Miley super fan, you get the hype and that's why you're here. So take that hype to the next level with a chart that will make your audience go what on earth just happened? the same way Miley does on at least a bi-annual basis. By the way, I'll tell you what just happened: your quartet just came in like a wrecking ball, and smashed every archaic stereotype about classical string players to PIECES!!

Gone are the days of strings not being able to feel the groove. Silenced are the cynics who once called us boring and one-dimensional. A new era is upon us, where violins, violas, & cellos can get up, get out, and rock the faces off of the proletariat right alongside our guitar slinging, drumstick twirling brethren! And this chart is just what you need to usher in this oh so bright future for all who rosin the bow:

Right from the start, this arrangement takes a unique spin on Miley's pop smash, with a lopsided groove that will have your listeners searching frantically for a downbeat. Their urges will finally be satisfied when the melody takes us back to that oh-so-familiar feeling of 4/4 security... but don't get too comfortable, because when that chorus drops you'd better hold on to your hats. That's right, the train is leaving the station for double-time town! Along this musical journey, you may also encounter glimpses of reggae, jazz, & bluegrass, culminating in a race to the finish that will wre-e-eck any musician who didn't come ready to hang. Oh, and just for funsies I threw in that classic showbiz' moment where the cellist steals the melody, so feel free to ham that up as much as possible, cello players!

This arrangement also makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create rhythmic grooves without the need for additional instruments, including chopping and strum bowing. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, various resources exist all over the internet to aid you in your quest towards having better time. I recommend this series, for example: https://youtu.be/kfX3kxjC93s

Performance time - 4:20... and if that doesn't make Miley Cyrus proud I don't know what will.

SKU: A0.1341998

By ABBA. By Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Arranged by Krista Broadway Swider. Pop. 15 pages. Krista Swider #927511. Published by Krista Swider (A0.1341998).

This Abba classic is a blast to play. This song’s form is simple, but it has really fun vocal line solos for all the instruments, snazzy synthesizer solos featured by the violins, and a great beat, which the cello and viola hold down.  The arrangement starts with an intro using only the top 3 voices, imitating the feel of the original music video which starts with the four Abba singers singing acapella.  Following the intro, viola and cello team up playing the “Take a Chance” rhythmic figure, emulating the chanted words from the original track, while the violins play the melody in duet form. The viola takes the melody on the first half of the verse, while the cello hugs the bass line and violins hang out on discreet descants and counter melodies. The cello then wails the melody on the second half of the verse, with a brief section in tenor clef.  The song repeats and fades out on the chorus.  Bowings and rehearsal letters are included for ease of sight-reading, ideal for gigging performances. This version has been arranged a half step down (the original song was written in B Major, and I adjusted the key to B-flat Major so that it’s a bit friendlier to string players).
