ā€˜Donā€™t want to miss a thingā€™, recorded by Aerosmith, and written by Diane Warren is a hugely popular rock ballad that was a number one hit in the USA. Selling over a million copies in the UK, it reached number four in the UK singles chart. Always a favourite for weddings, Capriccio Quartet recorded it for their repertoire, and it is a song that easily lends itself to a string arrangement.

I chose to stick to the original key of D, a great key for string players. At times I have thickened the texture by using double stopping. In this arrangement I have tried to use an open string wherever possible. In some cases there are bare fifths. If you prefer you can choose one of the notes to play instead, especially if this note is doubled in another part. I have also put in some bowing, but the endgame is to feel comfortable, so please feel free to change it and alter the slurring if it makes it easier. I have given the cellist some solos, but everyone in the quartet has some time in the sun in this arrangement. And   donā€™t be afraid to use open strings in this piece, especially in the semi- quavers. They sound great!

I am aiming this quartet at the professional market, for weddings and other events, but I am hopeful that younger players will also have the courage to try it, even if the intention is not to ever perform it but to have some fun! Let me hear any recordings you make. I can be reached very easily on Facebook and love to get feedback from people who buy my arrangements.

By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Jeff Tincher. Contemporary. Score and parts. 22 pages. Jeff Tincher #5354489. Published by Jeff Tincher (A0.584261).

Here is the song that added so many questions. John sings the song but in a later song they state that Paul was the walrusand what do these lyrics really mean? It is also a song from the made for BBC movie Magical Mystery Tour. A fun song with some great lyrics. In the original key. Duration = 4:42. For many years I laboured under the impression that George Harrison played guitar on this song as well as writing it, but it turns out to have been played by Eric Clapton.

This wonderful song is on the ā€˜100 Greatest Guitar Songsā€™ list, and number ten on ā€˜The Beatles 100 Greatest Songsā€™. None of this is a surprise! I have long wanted to arrange this for Capriccio String Quartet, and I am very proud of it. I think they give a tremendously passionate performance.

I am aiming this one at the professional market as it is quite complex. However, with the usual modifications I feel sure that young players could tackle it. I recommend dropping the cello an octave for the first twelve bars but the rest of the cello part falls within expectations for ABRSM Grade 5. As usual the double stopping often contains an open string but it will be possible simply to miss out a note out where tuning could be difficult for young players. Choose from the Score the note that is not already played by one of the others. I am usually writing double stopping to thicken the texture rather than for harmonic considerations. The bowing is just a guide. Take as many bows and play as many open strings as you need to make the song feel comfortable.

There is a difficult page turn for viola who plays throughout, so two bars before G could be omitted if necessary as other parts have the note E. The other players have a page break on rests, and the cellist can play open strings and quickly turn with the left hand.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow Ć¢ā‚¬Ā¦ Trio 3). 48 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #3905. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869207).

Program note:
As indicated by the title, this is my twelfth string quartet. My very first work, Aperture (1974), was a string quartet. In between I wrote four (nos. 2 ā€“ 5) for the Kronos Quartet, one (no. 6) for the Manhattan String Quartet, one (no. 7) for the Lydian String Quartet, one (no. 8) for the Artaria String Quartet, two (nos. 9 - 10) for the Hawthorne String Quartet, and one (no. 11) for the Formosa Quartet.

The number twelve immediately brought to mind the months of the year. But I thought a twelve-movement string quartet might be a bit excessive, and difficult to achieve in a coherent narrative arc. Most classical string quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are in four movements. So why not the seasons, a movement for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

I am a huge fan of The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. Confession: I am a huge fan of anything by maestro Haydn. For inspiration and guidance, I went to Haydnā€™s other oratorio The Seasons. Armed with a Dover publication of the full score and a recording of the complete work by Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI Classics, I got down to work over the summer of 2010.

String Quartet No. 12 ā€¦ The Seasons, after Franz Joseph Haydn is in four movements, played without pause between movements.

1) Intro: Heavy snow ā€¦ Spring: Crocuses blooming!!!
2) Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow ā€¦ Trio
3) Autumn: La Caccia ā€¦ Danza Rusticana ā€¦ Trio
4) Intro: Heavy snow again ā€¦ Winter: O Magnum Mysterium ā€¦ Hail storm!

The work begins with four descending chords, depicting the falling of snow. But itā€™s Spring and crocuses are seen peeping through the snow ā€¦
Summer begins with cloudbursts, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. A double rainbow appears after the storm. The sun emerges from the clouds in the Trio section. It is a lovely day after all; but then the clouds return ā€¦
La Caccia: men go hunting in the Autumn. Well, the men in Haydnā€™s days at least. Peasant ladies dance as they harvest in the fields. A hawk appears, soaring overhead in the Trio as the sun sets in an orange-red sky ...
In Winter snow falls again; but itā€™s the season to celebrate the Nativity. Violin and viola chant O magnum mysterium ā€¦ O Magnum Mysterium O great mystery Et admirabile sacramentum and wonderful sacrament Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum that animals should see the new-born Lord Jacentem in praesepio! lying in a manger! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera Blessed is the Virgin whose womb Meruerunt portare was worthy to bear Dominum Christum. Christ the Lord. Alleluia. Alleluia. A hailstorm wreaks havoc.

Fine.

By Of Monsters and Men. By Of Monsters and Men. Arranged by Dan Sanchez. Contemporary. Score and parts. 17 pages. Dan Sanchez #5026561. Published by Dan Sanchez (A0.799138).

Thank you for checking out my String Quartet arrangement of Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men. This can also be performed as String Trio, since the 2nd Violin Part is optional. This indie rock tune alternates between a high, middle, and low range melody that snakes its way through the group. Iā€™ve played this for cocktail hours, and this also works well for a wedding recessional song!

This is just one of my many special arrangements. Check out my full listing on Sheet Music Plus! I am always adding new items for String Duo, Trio, and Quartet. One thing that sets my arrangements apart from others is that I fit all of my parts on 2 sheets of music. This makes it so the songs can fit into a binder, without the need for flipping pages!

Another great thing (for multi-instrumental arrangements) is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other personā€™s music at the same time. This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past. If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect! This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.

Tenor and string quartet - Digital Download

Auf Texte aus der Bibel. Composed by Naji Hakim. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 7 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6385. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6385).

German ā€¢ English.

This piece shows my hope to have our churches not only in peace but also in full communion. Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by ā€Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburgā€ to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. Gen.8/11 : ā€And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off. ā€ Luk. 1/79 : ā€To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. ā€ Joh.14/27 : ā€Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. ā€ ...to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1,79) Words and music bind people together to form fellowships which guide us into the way of peace. Singing or playing together combine bodies and souls, so that our rhythm and breathing becomes one - a sense of belonging to one another is created which instils the very nature of peace. So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let GodĀ“s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let GodĀ“s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within GodĀ“s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. GodĀ“s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. Let GodĀ“s melody resound in you and guide your feet into the way of peace. Pastor Hanne Margrethe Tougaard.
