I didn’t seek to re-invent the wheel with this arrangement, but rather to capture some of its signature jazz combo swagger while fitting the signature lines & licks into string-friendly voicings. I did add an original intro & outro, which will give a bit more pizazz to your live performance than the fade out from Herbie’s original album version. The full chart includes written-out solos for each member of the quartet. I highly encourage improvising your own solos if you are comfortable, or even vamping one or more of the solo sections to really stretch out as you watch your next cocktail hour gig fly by! For a shorter (and significantly more lame…) performance, you can instead cut one or more of the solo sections from letter C thru F to save time. This arrangement makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create a rhythmic foundation without the need for additional rhythm instruments, including chopping and ghost notes. This arrangement of Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? for String Quartet can also be performed with a String Trio, since the 2nd Violin part is optional.  This song was featured in the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco, starring Johnny Depp.  It’s got a Spanish flair, which can be a lot of fun at wedding parties and receptions. 1st Violin hogs the melody, I’ll admit that.  But the 2nd Violin adds some really nice harmony, and the Viola will stay quite busy! The Cello part is essential with its hearty bass line. The video shows my arrangement of Mercy for String Quartet but without voice, to give you an idea. Many things about it are similar to this version for voice and quartet but the voice carries the tune so it is not so demanding for the first violin. There are some excerpts to listen to in the 30 second sample of the quartet with my daughter singing. This is more difficult to play than some of my other arrangements as it is very syncopated and it is important to feel the stresses on the off beats. As far as possible I have written these as down bows which I hope will help the players to lean into the groove! The pizzicato baseline will need to be prominent, but the inner parts very light, and played near the end of the bow so that the singer can be heard. I have added lyrics to some of the lines to help with the rhythms. I hope you have as much fun playing this one as I did arranging it. It reached number one in both British and USA charts, and the top ten in many countries across the world.I really loved arranging this for string quartet and hope that it will give you pleasure to play. I have placed this piece within the Advanced category. In rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet and we tried it various tempi between70 and 84 bpm. Provided the energy is present in the playing it sounds just as good at a slower speed!Younger players could also tackle this song, which is in an easy key for strings. Although some of the rhythmic patterns appear difficult on the page, the key is to listen to the song and to do them by ear. There is not a lot of syncopation, and the on-beat semi quavers sound wonderful on strings. If they are played vigorously, with all the staccato  and accents in the score, you can get away with a much slower speed altogether. As usual, the bowing is just a guide and the double stopping always includes an open string. On the rare occasion that the double stopping includes two notes without the open string, choose one of them that is not doubled in one of the other parts.Where there is a dynamic ‘p’ it is important to observe it. There are some very dissonant harmonies in this piece. Playing them loudly will sound a bit odd, but I tried leaving them out and the result was a drop in tension. This song’s form is simple, but it has really fun vocal line solos for all the instruments, snazzy synthesizer solos featured by the violins, and a great beat, which the cello and viola hold down.  The arrangement starts with an intro using only the top 3 voices, imitating the feel of the original music video which starts with the four Abba singers singing acapella.  Following the intro, viola and cello team up playing the “Take a Chance� rhythmic figure, emulating the chanted words from the original track, while the violins play the melody in duet form. The viola takes the melody on the first half of the verse, while the cello hugs the bass line and violins hang out on discreet descants and counter melodies. The cello then wails the melody on the second half of the verse, with a brief section in tenor clef.  The song repeats and fades out on the chorus.  Bowings and rehearsal letters are included for ease of sight-reading, ideal for gigging performances. This version has been arranged a half step down (the original song was written in B Major, and I adjusted the key to B-flat Major so that it’s a bit friendlier to string players).
