So I made an interlocking pizzicato part between the 1st & 2nd violin, which re-creates the pulse of the fingerpicking guitar from Needtobreathe's original track. With a little bit of rehearsal, your quartet will soon be sailing through these verses with no need for any assistance from an accompanist.That being said, if your thirst for greatness falls a little short, you can also dial this tune back to easy mode and perform with a guitarist. I have included an acoustic guitar part specifically for this purpose, because I, like you, have done my fair share of wedding gigs where someone calls a tune at the last minute and you have no time (or desire) to waste on a rehearsal.This arrangement uses strum bowing and ghost notes fairly extensively as a means to create rhythmic grooves. The 1st violin states the melody, accompanied by the other instruments. The first variation beginning at measure 21 sees the melody in the cello and viola, with a slower tempo allowing the upward moving 1st and 2nd violin figures to provide a gentle and moving accompaniment. The 2nd variation has the melody in the 2nd violin with the cello embarking on an energetic 'walking bass' accompaniment. In the concluding section the tempo and dynamic drop back for the final cadence. This arrangement is suitable in a church service at anytime during the year and especially during the Easter season. This is also ideal repertoire for High School and College String Quartets. The performance duration is over three minutes and the full score has four individual parts attached. After a short intro the tune appears in the 1st violin with the viola mirroring the tune. The cello provides a pizz pulse while the 2nd violin has a gentle rocking eighth note accompaniment. The tune then appears in the cello with the viola providing the gentle eighth note rocking figure and the two violins play a harmonized counter-melody. A dominant cadence at m54 leads the arrangement to the final coda-like phrase which is played in the 1st violin and has a rich chromatic accompaniment. The full score has four individual parts attached and the performance duration is close to three minutes. Ideal in church services where this hymn is admired, as well as college music departments where string quartets are looking for new and innovative arrangements.
