It is sung at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Royal Navy (GB), and is often used for military observances, patriotic occasions, and at funerals for military personnel and for two US Presidents.This arrangement is for string quartet, with four different and interesting arrangements included -- one for each verse -- before returning to the opening arrangement of the familiar melody. The first violin begins and ends the piece with the melody. Other verses feature the cello, followed by the viola. However, he seems not to have made a final decision, and the authorship of the concert suite published after his death as Op.20a is unknown.In this arrangement for string quartet  we have the very famous seventh number of the suite: Neapolitan Dance (Danse Napolitaine). During his short lifetime Schubert composed prolifically in many genres.  His original composition of Marche Militaire was for 'four hands' or two Pianos, and all arrangements, including this one, usually present only the first part of the first of three marches that comprise the complete work (Trois Marches Militaire, Op.51).  Among the devices used by Schubert is clever decoration of the opening and closing unison phrases which are suggestive of a bugle call.
