This is an arrangement of one of the most beautiful airs of all time.  This can be played for any performance.  Lots of care should go into phrasing and dynamics.  This also works very well for funerals.

The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious, as no other collector of folk tunes encountered it, and all known examples are descended from Ms. Ross’ submission to Petrie’s collection (1855). The title of the air comes from the name of the county located in Northern Ireland. The air was collected by Jane Ross of Limavady, County Londonderry, who heard it played by an itinerant piper or fiddler. The descendants of blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry assert that he is the musician from whom she transcribed the tune but there is no historical evidence to support this speculation. The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Londonderry. This led to the descriptive title Londonderry Air being used for the piece

A new and fresh arrangement of this most popular Irish tune, 'Danny Boy' (Londonderry Air). This tune is also sung to the Gospel hymn He Looked Beyond My Faults. Starting in the viola part, the melody moves through the quartet allowing each player an opportunity to lead. While some slurring and phrasing is included, take care to be consistent with phrasing the melody and pay close attention to the dynamic markings. The three complete statements of the melody take the arrangement through three tonal areas and allow each player full command of their instrument's range. Aimed at the advanced intermediate level (grade 6 ABRSM), this arrangement is approximately four minutes in duration and is ideal repertoire for high school and college recitals and competitions. IRISH WASHERWOMAN, GALWAY BAY, GARRY OWEN and LONDONDERRY AIR Many different choices could be made from the wealth of Irish folk and popular music. Nevertheless, the ‘Irish Jig’, with its strong connection with the tradition of Irish dancing, really chooses itself. The Irish Washerwoman and Garry Owen are both well-known and are written in the typical compound metre. The other two tunes have both become extremely well known in the world at large. Londonderry air also became very known as “Danny Boy� and Galway Bay by Dr Arthur Colahan was recorded by Bing Crosby and subsequently by Irish groups like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers.

Danny Boy, or Londonderry Air is a famous Irish tune. Arranged for Strings Quartet. I tried not to move away from the original harmonic progression, so it is short and simple, but as beautiful as it was intended to be. Embellishments were added to help beginner players to feel and implement the style better.
