String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1192354 Composed by Martin Shaw and Percy Dearmer. Arranged by Gayle Gould. 19th Century,Children,Christian,Christmas,Historic. 22 pages. Gayle Gould #791785. Published by Gayle Gould (A0.1192354). A happy and fun string quartet arrangement, approximately Grade 4, of a popular early-American Christmas carol originating in England, with sources placing it at various dates and locales. Given the cultural setting, and given the popularity of country dances, no doubt at least the children danced to this tune. The carol is also known by the name The First Good Thing That Mary Had, which is the first line of text.PDF contains the full score, individual parts, and a piano reduction provided to give a quick idea of what the arrangement sounds like. The number of verses varies, but one thing is for certain. It's purpose was to teach the story of the Virgin Mary from the birth of Jesus until His glorification in heaven. There are at least seven verses, each one telling Mary's experiences through the life of Christ. No doubt this was used to teach children and others who did not have or could not read the Scriptures.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491680 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Holiday,Traditional. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #1068354. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1491680). I Saw Three Ships is a traditional English Christmas carol that has gained popularity for its melodic simplicity and festive themes. Here are some key points about its significance:Historical ContextOrigins: The earliest known printed version of I Saw Three Ships dates back to the 17th century, with a notable publication by William Sandys in 1833. The song was likely known earlier under As I Sat On a Sunny Bank, particularly popular in Cornwall.Cultural Relevance: The carol reflects a period when maritime themes were prominent in English culture, coinciding with the Age of Exploration. This context made the imagery of ships particularly resonant for audiences of the time.Symbolism and InterpretationThe Ships: The lyrics describe three ships arriving on Christmas Day, which has led to various interpretations. One common belief is that the ships symbolize the three vessels that carried the relics of the Magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Alternatively, they may represent the camels used by the Magi, often referred to as ships of the desert due to their role in transporting the wise men to Bethlehem.Bethlehem's Geography: The song mentions ships sailing into Bethlehem, which raises questions, as the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea, about 20 miles away. This discrepancy has prompted interpretations that focus on the symbolic rather than literal meaning of the ships.Musical LegacyPopularity: I Saw Three Ships has been embraced by various artists across genres, with notable recordings by musicians such as Sting, Glen Campbell, and Sufjan Stevens. Its enduring appeal makes it a staple in Christmas music repertoires.Lyric Variations: Different song versions have emerged over the years, reflecting local traditions and interpretations. Some variations even change the context from Christmas to other celebrations, demonstrating the carol's flexibility in cultural contexts. In summary, I Saw Three Ships is significant as a cherished Christmas carol and a cultural artifact that encapsulates historical maritime themes, religious symbolism, and the evolution of folk music traditions.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416898 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #998489. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416898). The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. So, in summary, the Fugue in A-flat minor is an essential early organ work by Brahms that demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint, even though the organ was not his primary instrument. It is considered a significant and high-quality piece within Brahms' overall organ output.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.938424 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century. Score and parts. 46 pages. Colin Bayliss #11309. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label. String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491580 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Holiday,Traditional. 13 pages. Jmsgu3 #1068280. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1491580). Here We Come A-Wassailing is a traditional English Christmas carol with roots that likely extend back to the mid-19th century, if not earlier. The exact authorship of the carol is unknown. The song is associated with the tradition of wassailing, which involves going door-to-door singing in exchange for food and drink. This practice predates Christianity and was part of mid-winter celebrations. The term wassail originates from the Anglo-Saxon greeting waes hael, meaning be in good health. This greeting evolved into a toast, with one person saying was hail and another responding drinc hail while passing around a communal bowl of a drink made from mulled ale or mead, spices, and apples, known as wassail. Wassailing has two primary forms: one that occurs post-Christmas, often associated with Twelfth Night, and another that takes place before Christmas. The latter involves singing carols and sharing wassail from a bowl. At the same time, the former includes rituals to encourage fertility in orchards, such as singing to trees and offering cider-soaked toast. The carol Here We Come A-Wassailing has several variations, including Here We Come A-Caroling and Here We Come A-Christmasing, each with different lyrics but similar themes of merriment and well-wishing for the New Year.
