The word was regularly used in the burden of carols in the middle ages towards the early modern period.

Composed by Giles Farnaby. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #888177. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1298204).

Giles Farnaby was an English composer and virginalist during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his contributions to Elizabethan and Jacobean music. He was born around 1560, and he lived during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was a contemporary of other notable English composers such as William Byrd and John Dowland. Farnaby's compositions are known for their variety of styles. He wrote pieces that ranged from lively dance tunes to more intricate and introspective works. His music often featured elements of English folk melodies and dance rhythms.

Giles Farnaby's Fantasias are significant for their role in the development of keyboard music, their influence on later composers, and their historical documentation of musical practices in late Renaissance England. Farnaby's music often displays a lively and whimsical character, with syncopations, rapid passagework, and playful ornamentation. His style was influenced by the continental keyboard music of his time, especially that of the English virginalists like John Bull and William Byrd. However, Farnaby's compositions also have a distinct character, marked by their dance-like rhythms and catchy melodies.

Although Farnaby's music fell out of favor during the Baroque period, there has been a resurgence of interest in his works in the modern era. Musicians and scholars have rediscovered and recorded his compositions, helping to revive his legacy.

Composed by Traditional English Carol. Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance,Standards,World. Score and parts. 7 pages. Chicory Music #5324901. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734418).

The Boar's Head Carol
This Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.

The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. It is also said to be the very 1st Christmas carol to ever be publish in English because it dates back that early.

Although the modern versions of the song makes no mention of Christmas, the original verses does so in The boar's head we bring with song, in worship of Him that thus sprung, of a Virgin to redress all wrong; Noel

This Intermediate Level arrangement starts out in C Major and modulates to D Major for the final chorus .

Performance time is approx. 1 minute 45 seconds.

HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING - String Orchestra / String Quartet - Intermediate

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems, having been written by Charles Wesley. Wesley had requested and received slow and solemn music for his lyrics, not the joyful tune expected today. Moreover, Wesley's original opening couplet is Hark! how all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings.[1]

The popular version is the result of alterations by various hands, notably by Wesley's co-worker George Whitefield who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one, and by Felix Mendelssohn. In 1840, a hundred years after the publication of Hymns and Sacred Poems, Mendelssohn composed a cantata to commemorate Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, and it is music from this cantata, adapted by the English musician William H. Cummings to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, that propels the carol known today.

This arrangement, in the string friendly key of G concert, can be preformed as a quartet with or without the optional acoustic bass and drum set parts. It may be performed as a string orchestra with all the string parts plus or minus the drum set part. Your performers and audience will enjoy the modern harmonies used in this presentation. Performance time approx. 2 minutes 6 seconds.

Carol of the Bells is a well-known Christmas carol with a rich history rooted in Ukrainian culture. Here are the key points to understand about this iconic piece:

Original Composition: The melody of Carol of the Bells is derived from a Ukrainian folk song called Shchedryk, which Mykola Leontovych composed in 1914. Shchedryk, which translates to The Little Swallow, was originally a New Year's song celebrating the arrival of spring and good fortune.

Cultural Context: The song's origins are tied to Ukrainian traditions, where it was sung by young girls going door-to-door on New Year's Eve, wishing families prosperity and good luck for the coming year. The swallow in the song symbolizes the arrival of spring and abundance.

English Lyrics: In 1936, American composer Peter Wilhousky adapted the melody for Christmas, writing new lyrics that emphasized bells and Christmas cheer themes. This version transformed Shchedryk into Carol of the Bells, quickly gaining popularity in the United States and becoming a staple of Christmas music.

Musical Structure: The carol features a distinctive four-note ostinato and is metrically bistable, allowing listeners to perceive the rhythm differently. It is typically arranged in 3/4 time and has a lively and festive feel, contributing to its widespread appeal.

Widespread Adaptations: Carol of the Bells has been recorded in over 150 versions across various musical genres, including classical, jazz, rock, and heavy metal. Notable adaptations include those by Mannheim Steamroller and John Williams, which have helped to cement its status as a Christmas classic.

Cultural Significance: The song's association with Christmas has overshadowed its Ukrainian roots, leading to a complex relationship with its cultural identity. In recent years, there has been a movement to reclaim Shchedryk as a significant part of Ukrainian heritage, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Modern Recognition: The song is frequently featured in films, television shows, and holiday concerts, making it a beloved part of the Christmas season. Its ability to evoke joy and nostalgia resonates with audiences worldwide.

In summary, Carol of the Bells is not just a Christmas carol but a piece with deep cultural roots and a fascinating history of transformation from a Ukrainian folk song to a global holiday favorite.
