Listen as the colors change with instruments playing, being silent, doubling and independent lines. Program Note: Affects, written in 2016, is a piece for string quartet that depicts the human emotions of grief, fear, anger, and sadness. Grief is a moderate paced movement where the different instruments respond to the loss of bond and affection in the human condition. Fear begins with a solo cello line that experiments with tonality. Each instrument is introduced with the same line, essentially building up the tension and confusion that is caused when humans exhibit fear. Anger uses a quick, rushed tempo similar to the fast, exerted force that is caused when humans express anger. Often, humans find themselves acting before they think, which is how the instruments interact with each other in this movement. The string quartet culminates in a slow, brooding movement, Sadness, where the themes are exhibited and built upon in a contrapuntal motion. Humans express sadness with misery, which is shown in the heavy lines of the instruments. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869862). Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 15 string quartets. As a tribute to him and his glorious music, my 15th string quartet is dedicated to his memory. The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme.  Bach actually came up with the idea.  In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural.   Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C.   Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony.  The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati.  I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement.  Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin.    It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo.   Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15.  But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement.  In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter.   I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4.   It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement.   I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse.   The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz.  That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that  just repeating the same notes.  His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15.  The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad.  The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH.  Mine is a slow, evolving set of chord progressions that sounds like a dirge: gliding through the waters on a gondola in the canals of Venice on its way to Isola di San Michele.

This is a two-movement piece comprising of a prelude and an allegro. The entire piece is meant to convey a simple story of witnessing the change of different lifestyles, from the peaceful and simple rural life to the electrifying grandeur of urban city life. The prelude, signifying the rural atmosphere, begins with unsettling chords that feel seasonal and constantly moving. The different string melodies are as lovingly soothing as playing in the grassy fields and mountains. They are fun, pleasant, and whimsical, and they express the rather playful and tranquil setting of rural living. The beginning chords may feel unusually active, but it also adds to the color of this calming tranquility. Life couldn't be any better. In contrast to the fun and joyful theme of the prelude, the allegro embodies the absolute hustle and bustle of the big city. Explosive harmonies progress through the movement. Melodies from the prelude now intertwine with this new faster theme, playing more lively and vigorous. The mood has changed. Everything seems fast-paced and maybe overloading. But, maybe that's not a bad thing. A bit into the movement, as the hustle and bustle finally slow down, the essence of the prelude returns to calm the music. Homesickness mixed with overwhelming emotions is just as powerful of an expression as joy or anger. Filled with confidence and resolve, the music quickens back into its fast theme. The nature of intense focus, inspired by the urban surroundings, mixes with the joy and fun of the old ways. Everything now seems not just more familiar and comforting, but lively as well. As the music reaches its end, those unsettling chords from the prelude return to once again remind us that the rural lifestyle will always be a part of us. Maybe this city life won't be such a bad thing. We experience the best life when it comes with change. While I never lived in a rural community myself, I can empathize with the experience of people who have from their own stories and emotions. And when they move into the overwhelming cityscape, they sometimes either break down or build up. In the end, though, I can never really understand what it is like until I move into a rural community. But I know nothing will ever change how they grew up there, as the experiences always seem to follow them into the next chapter of their adventures. And it is because of that kind of beautiful resolve, did I nickname this Prelude and Allegro Urbanalia. When life meets change it opens up a whole new story.

The idea of the piece was derived while I laid in my bed simply thinking about nothing specific one night. The opening melodic and rhythmic ideas just jumped into my mind. After writing them down, the first movement flowed naturally out and I finished it within a few hours late that night. I wrote the third movement in a similar state of mind. I began to think about how my mind general worked when trying to create music. As I was wondering the music just started to appear in my mind. Then my mind started groovin' as the music came flowing out. The second movement came much later. I had much more difficulty trying to come up with ideas for that one. In order to write it, I had to put myself into a serene state of mind with no distractions whatsoever. Again the music flowed from my mind and in one night I finished the second movement. To this day, I find that these three states of mind are where I am best able to create music.
