O Christmas Tree, originally known as O Tannenbaum, is a significant holiday carol with deep cultural and historical roots. Here are some key points regarding its importance:

Origins and Evolution
German Roots: The carol originated in Germany, where O Tannenbaum was a traditional folk song that celebrated the fir tree's beauty and symbolized faithfulness and endurance. The melody dates back to the 16th century, and the modern lyrics were adapted by German composer Ernst Anschütz in 1824.

Cultural Adaptation: In the 19th century, the song transitioned into English as O Christmas Tree, aligning with the growing Christmas tree tradition in Western cultures, particularly in the UK and the US. This adaptation reflects the broader cultural exchange and the incorporation of German customs into English-speaking Christmas celebrations.

Symbolism
Evergreen Significance: The lyrics of O Christmas Tree emphasize the tree's evergreen nature, which serves as a metaphor for reliability and hope. The fir tree is celebrated for its beauty and ability to remain vibrant throughout the seasons, symbolizing steadfastness and renewal.

Christmas Tradition: The song has become synonymous with Christmas celebrations, marking the festive season for many families. It encapsulates the joy and warmth associated with decorating Christmas trees, a practice that has become a worldwide central aspect of holiday traditions.

Musical and Cultural Impact
Widespread Popularity: O Christmas Tree is one of the most recognized Christmas carols, performed in various versions across different cultures. Its melody and themes resonate with audiences, making it a staple in holiday music repertoires.

Educational Value: The carol serves as an educational tool, introducing children to concepts of cultural heritage, music history, and the significance of seasonal traditions. It allows for discussions about the evolution of holiday practices and the blending of cultural influences.

In summary, O Christmas Tree is important as a beloved holiday song and a cultural artifact that reflects historical traditions, symbolism, and the spirit of Christmas.

Composed by Phillipe De Vitry. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #940841. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1356173).

The motet O canenda/Rex regum by Philippe de Vitry is significant as it represents the emergence of the classic isorhythmic motet, which simultaneously sets a pair of texts in its two upper voices. Philippe de Vitry, a 14th-century French composer, is considered a leading figure in the changes that occurred in French music around 1325. His motets, including O canenda/Rex regum, are regarded as strikingly individual, exploiting unique structural ideas. They are part of the early development of the ars nova style of composition, which introduced new rhythmic and notational techniques.

The structure of Philippe de Vitry's motet O canenda/Rex regum is characterized by the classic isorhythmic motet, which sets a pair of texts simultaneously in its two upper voices. This composition represents the emergence of the ars nova style of late medieval music, introducing new rhythmic and notational techniques. The repeated rhythmic patterns of the tenor do not necessarily accord with melodic ones, and the motet is known for packing symbols and thematic subtleties into each short piece. Philippe de Vitry's motets, including O canenda/Rex regum, are strikingly individual, contributing to the evolution of musical forms and representing innovative trends in 14th-century French music.

The text of motets from this period often contained religious, secular, or courtly love themes. The words rex regum et dominus dominancium from the motet evoke the notion of an earthly king who emulates Christ on his heavenly seat as he assumes his throne. The text likely reflects the religious or secular themes commonly found in motet compositions of that era.

Philippe de Vitry, a French composer, poet, and music theorist, was born on October 31, 1291, and died on June 9, 1361. Philippe de Vitry's O canenda/Rex regum was composed around 1320. He was appointed Bishop of Meaux on January 3 1351, and held this post until his death.

Composed by Turlough O' Carolan. Arranged by Thomas Quigley. Celtic,Classical,Concert,Holiday. Score and parts. 16 pages. Thomas Quigley #3390789. Published by Thomas Quigley (A0.731809).

This may differ from what O' Carolan had intended, as it has been re-arranged in a classical style, with copious articulations, dynamic markings and changes of texture. It is however a very fine piece which exploits the potential of his compositions to be transferred to other ensembles. A very good student or amateur quartet will enjoy the modern nuances in the off-beat rhythms, and will relish the opportunity to turn the piece into a highly effective concert item. As always, it is possible to juxtapose two O Carolan tunes. This one could be preceded by a slow movement such as O' Carolan's Devotion.

Your String Quartet will enjoy playing this inventive and stirring setting of the great Advent/Christmas hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel (VENI EMMANUEL). Composed in a Neo-Renaissance style, it sets all seven verses modulating into four keys while passing the melody from voice to voice before concluding with several sudden and surprising key changes that lead to a powerful cadence on the altered note of the Picardy third. It may be performed alone or with a choir. The choral editions are published in either English or Latin. They are the first of Three Motets on Latin Christmas Hymns. The other motets in this series are settings of Of the Father’s Love Begotten (CORDE NATUS EX PARENTIS) and O Come, All Ye Faithful (ADESTE FIDELIS), which are also available in English or Latin.
