C Jam Blues for String Orchestra!

C Jam Blues is a jazz standard composed in 1942 by Duke Ellington and performed by countless other musicians, such as Dave Grusin, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, and Charles Mingus.

As the title suggests, the piece follows a twelve-bar blues form in the key of C major. The tune is well known for being extremely easy to play, with the entire melody featuring only two notes: G and C.

A performance typically features several improvised solos. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.

It was also known as Duke's Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts.

This work is a short waltz, written with the intent of sounding both pretty and soothing.
As crazy as it may seem, inspiration for this piece came from its composer being passionately kissed by a girl at the cast party for a stage show, which he was in the cast of. She happened to be wearing blue face-paint at the time, and at one point, with her finger, she smeared some of it onto his face, leaving a faint blue stripe. Although the two of them did not end up dating, it still made for a beautiful piece of music.
The Blue Stripe was performed (in a slightly different arrangement) for the first time ever by Binghamton University's Explorchestra, on 2 December 2017.

Some songs are born great -- others take 30 years to come together! The chorus of the widely beloved hit bluegrass song Wagon Wheel was originally recorded as a Bob Dylan bootleg in 1973. After hearing this recording, Ketch Secor of the band Old Crow Medicine Show wrote new verses in 2003 and used Dylan's melody to create a full-blown country song. And the rest is history! Wagon Wheel has since been certified platinum and covered by a number of other notable artists, and has even been called the Free Bird of the new generation -- so you can't go wrong adding this one to your gig books! Featuring the catchy choruses, danceable feel, and country fiddle interludes of the original, this Cellobat chart for your string quartet is sure to get your audience singing along. Overall, this is an intermediate-level arrangement, but I'm rating it advanced-intermediate for some tricky rhythms and high notes (up to 4th position) in the violin parts; this will be learnable for students and sightreadable for professionals.
