String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1107440 By Nathan Evans. By Alexander Oriet, David Phelan, and Nathan Evans. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). 19th Century,Folk,Multicultural,World. 12 pages. Joel Jacklich #710097. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.1107440). New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1334145 Composed by Trad & Alan Edgar. Folk,Traditional. 36 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #920362. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1334145). Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements. I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instrumentsV WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.   The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.DURATION: 15 minutes.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1112599 Composed by John Bacchus Dykes. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. 19th Century,Christian,Patriotic,Religious,Sacred. 16 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #714609. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1112599). Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.

String Quartet Cello,Double Bass,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.966178 Composed by Robert Johnson and Robert Johnson. Arranged by Joe Rosochacki. Instructional,Renaissance. Score and parts. 4 pages. Joe Rosochacki #2010413. Published by Joe Rosochacki (A0.966178). This Alman was originally written for lute. The Alman was part of the dances of Renaissance Suites that later occurs in the Baroque Period. Robert Johnson was a master lutenist during the Renaissance England. The beautiful 16th Century counterpoint is ewvident in his writing. Robert Johnson was the son of John Johnson, who was lutenist to Elizabeth I. In 1594 Robert's father died, and in 1596 he joined the household of George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon as an apprentice. Robert is assumed to have been around 13 at the time, as this was a typical age to begin an apprenticeship, but his date of birth is not known. Carey and his wife Elizabeth Spencer, were patrons of the lutenist and composer John Dowland, who dedicated various compositions to them. (wiki reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson_%28English_composer%29) ThIs arrangemen is for intermediate orchestra and is geared for educational purposes of uncerstanding 16th Century counterpoint.
