When Can I See You Again is an electronic, dance song that runs throughout Disney Pixar's movie Wreck-It-Ralph. However, how does the thumbing of kick drums and the whirl of synthesizers translate to a string quartet?This arrangment was written for late elementary and middle school students in mind. The melody is split up between each instrument allowing for each student to be featured, but also teaching young musicians when to play out and when to play under the melody. Most of the players use pizzaccato or tremolo at some point, allowing the musicians to explore the different textures they can create with their instruments. Students are introduced to some syncopation but are still given strong downbeats by someone else in the ensemble. This arrangment allows for students to learn fundemental music skills while also playing something they have heard on the big screen!

The film composer, Dario Marianelli, used several period pieces of music for scenes in the movie. This is a lively festive dance that was originally composed by Henry Purcell who lived in the 17th century. It soundsvery folk-like and it's possible he heard it being played by a band and decided to formally write it down.I took the original music and added a section to it that I composed which sounds stylistically right to give it a bit more length. This musicis great for wedding recessional or just if you want a lively background music piece for your reception or gig it is fun to play. I also did a trioarrangement and you will find that on SMP as well. As of this writing I haven't. posted it yet.

I met members of the Nico Quartet (Minami Yoshida, Alison Kim, Chih-Ta Chen and Deok Yong Kim) when I hired them to be part of the instrumental ensemble for a recording session of my Missa Pro Defunctis in the Eben Jordan Studio at the New England Conservatory of Music in the spring of 2019.On a later occasion that spring I heard their cellist Deok Jong Kim as the soloist in the Shostakovich Cello Concerto wit the NEC Philharmonic in Jordan Hal.  I was blown away by her impeccable and lyrical performance.A month later I saw the Nico Quartet in a Jordan Hall recital as one of the Honors Ensembles at NEC 2019.  This time I was blown away by all four members of the group.Right there and then I decided that I should write a string quartet for them.  This is my 13th string quartet.  Three more and I will catch to Beethoven.   LOL!!!NICO is in five movements.1. I have made a one minute video of this Voice and Quartet version of the song, plus the thirty second audio clip which features the introduction. My daughter, Alice Rose Wild, is singing the vocal part. This is one of my favourite arrangements and you can view a professional quartet play a live version of the Quartet but without the singer at my Youtube Channel, Helen Marple-Horvat Songwriter, Arranger, Composer, Capriccio Quartet, Chandelier.It is in a different key, and the first violin has the tune which entails more double stopping for the other players. Otherwise it is quite similar to the this version. The bowing is only a guide, so feel free to use lots of bow changes if it helps you to play it like a rock star! Aria is scored for Standard String Quartet (2 violins, viola and violincello) It is a very restful melodic piece based on a single motif heard in bar 1. Written in the key of D major the piece is very hymn -like in design- with long notes and chords but has some unusual harmonies. The searing theme is stated then repeated with variation in texture. The theme is then developed using the rhythmic motif in the beginning climaxing in E major briefly before calmly returning to D major to repeat again. On this repeat more variation and articulation takes place before a restful conclusion. The range of all instruments is around two octaves with no complicated rhythms and I've tried to keep all parts interesting. and evenly balanced in terms of quantity . Bowing is left to the performers. The full score is 8 pages and parts are 3 pages each- it is roughly 5 mins 30 in length. I have set it to intermediate level but an early intermediate should be ok with some of the parts. The whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.
