The music of String Quartet - Dance Card shares three transcendental aspects of life: Time, Death, and Love. It is our relationship with these three that defines our priorities. Set as three dances – Holding on to Time (Bolero), Death Tango (Tango), and Love’s Pas de Deux (Bourrée Nouveau) – Dance Card explores these relationships. Whether our dance card is open or full, in each of these we have choices to make.

Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.

Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as an M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.

This is the third of three pieces for string quartet and therefore acts as a finale. Numbers I and II are titled 'Moving Between' and 'Breathing' respectively and all three are available on this site. Any one of these may be performed separately or the three movements can be played as a set. On occasions the textures of 'Drama' hark back to those heard in 'Moving Between', however in the latter there is transitional material between textures, be they melodic or chordal. Here, transitions are absent andcontrasts are starker, being produced by opposites such as slow and fast speeds, symmetrical and asymmetrical harmonies, porous and thick textures and sound and noise.

A fuller title may have been Moving Between Extremes since it deals with the contrast between monody and harmony. Transforming one texture into the other is done in a number of ways. There are not only areas where transformation is occurring, but also others where a texture remains the same for some time.
