I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some percuissive techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. This piece is a blast to play and I hope you enjoy it!

Your students and audience will both have lots of fun, and this is really effective in recruitment concerts as well. The piece starts with some percussive stomps and slaps that sound great on stage and are instantly recognizable. The 6/8 meter may be a challenge if your students haven't played in that rhythmic space before, but the familiarity of the song will help. The song is squarely in D harmonic minor, and as such gives a good opportunity to practice F natural, B flat, and low C# fingerings. This piece is a blast and I know your students will enjoy playing it.

I was enamoured especially by the Grosses Fugue -and learned to play each part on my viola. As a composer, I take a more personal view of the genre. Thus, this work exemplifies this thru use of a 5 note motif derived from my first name. I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didn’t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn – the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream.
