String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.845973

By Miley Cyrus. By Henry Walter, Lukasz Gottwald, Maureen McDonald, Sacha Skarbek, and Stephan Richard Moccio. Arranged by Kyle Pudenz. Contemporary,Pop. Score and parts. 34 pages. ViolinVagabond Music #5310843. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845973).

Why settle for a bland transcription of Hannah Montana when you can have an action-packed, thrill-filled arrangement that's ALMOST as crazy as Miley Cyrus!? (almost)

You've heard the song. You've seen the video. Whether or not you're a Miley super fan, you get the hype and that's why you're here. So take that hype to the next level with a chart that will make your audience go what on earth just happened? the same way Miley does on at least a bi-annual basis. By the way, I'll tell you what just happened: your quartet just came in like a wrecking ball, and smashed every archaic stereotype about classical string players to PIECES!!

Gone are the days of strings not being able to feel the groove. Silenced are the cynics who once called us boring and one-dimensional. A new era is upon us, where violins, violas, & cellos can get up, get out, and rock the faces off of the proletariat right alongside our guitar slinging, drumstick twirling brethren! And this chart is just what you need to usher in this oh so bright future for all who rosin the bow:

Right from the start, this arrangement takes a unique spin on Miley's pop smash, with a lopsided groove that will have your listeners searching frantically for a downbeat. Their urges will finally be satisfied when the melody takes us back to that oh-so-familiar feeling of 4/4 security... but don't get too comfortable, because when that chorus drops you'd better hold on to your hats. That's right, the train is leaving the station for double-time town! Along this musical journey, you may also encounter glimpses of reggae, jazz, & bluegrass, culminating in a race to the finish that will wre-e-eck any musician who didn't come ready to hang. Oh, and just for funsies I threw in that classic showbiz' moment where the cellist steals the melody, so feel free to ham that up as much as possible, cello players!

This arrangement also makes use of modern extended string techniques in order to create rhythmic grooves without the need for additional instruments, including chopping and strum bowing. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, various resources exist all over the internet to aid you in your quest towards having better time. I recommend this series, for example: https://youtu.be/kfX3kxjC93s

Performance time - 4:20... and if that doesn't make Miley Cyrus proud I don't know what will.

By U2. By U2. Arranged by Kyle Pudenz. Celtic,Contemporary,Irish,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 30 pages. ViolinVagabond Music #753361. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.1153128).

One does not simply walk into their local music store to find a string arrangement like this one... Unlike much of what you'll find out in the world of cheap gig music, this was in fact written BY a string player who has played in symphony orchestras, rock bands, and everything in between; who knows what gigging as a quartet looks like, but also what will wow your audiences without requiring weeks of rehearsal to prepare. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest!

Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way.

All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. OR if you want to go even further, maybe you DO want to hire that band after all so you can just relax and play some melody lines. Lucky for you I have included a rhythm section lead sheet as part of the music packet, so that any auxiliary musicians you want to add in will be able to follow along with ease.

If you have absolutely no idea what chopping and strum bowing are, and you'd like to expand your horizons and learn a bit more, I highly recommend this resource:
https://strum-bowing-groove-academy.teachable.com?coupon_code=KYLE20&affcode=459429_z8y3atf
As mentioned before though, these techniques are not 100% necessary to handle this arrangement, so feel free to experiment on your own and add them in as you feel comfortable.

Enjoy this chart, and don't be afraid to do a little head-banging once that groove really locks in!

Performance time - approximately 4:05-4:20 depending on how hard you want to push the tempo

By OneRepublic. By Brent Kutzle, John Nathaniel, and Ryan Tedder. Arranged by Kyle Pudenz. Contemporary,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 29 pages. ViolinVagabond Music #5739335. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845979).

Whether you are a tried and true OneRepublic fan looking to add to your ensemble's catalog, a struggling musician hoping for Better Days, or simply want to create a little social media buzz by playing that song that you saw in a commercial about a Jeep, or ESPN, or NBC... THIS is the chart you are looking for!

Check out Dallas String Quartet performing this chart in their latest music video:
https://youtu.be/BBEdsXRELyw

What you have here, ladies & gentlemen, is no half-baked attempt at a transcription that you might find illegally floating around the internet for a few bucks. This meticulously-arranged instrumental reimagining of OneRepublic's new smash is much, MUCH more. Your journey through the pop-string realm starts out with a silky, cinematic intro that will filter out the commotion of your futile existence, opening the curtains to reveal a plane of pure musical ecstasy. When the groove finally drops, and OH, does it DROP... you will not be able to stop yourself from foot-tapping, head-banging, or otherwise moving one or more body parts in a definitively rhythmic fashion. Hip rhythmic chopping grooves, fingerboard slaps, and a healthy dose of syncopation will take this sick beat to another level! And if that isn't enough to pique your interest, be on the lookout for some sexy reharminizations throughout the tune that will make you honestly wonder why those chords weren't in the song to begin with...

Just when you thought this couldn't get any better: THERE IS A SOLO SECTION!! I've included some written solos, but if you prefer to improvise your own, that is allowed and encouraged. You can also vamp it if you need to kill a little time, or just want to show off for a few more bars.

**This score is also available with Rhythm Section Parts for guitar, bass & drum set, which your ensemble can use to perform with a full band. Visit https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/21765313?aff_id=655189 for more details**

Having a great ensemble may be the first step to successfully landing the big gigs, but having repertoire that gives your musicians the chance to shine will make you stand out from the rest. So don't settle for reading off of a piano score or hacking through questionably-obtained transcriptions when you can have the real deal. Fresh tunes, arranged by a real string player who has been in your shoes and knows how to wow the crowd!

Thanks for visiting, and I hope this chart brings us all to some Better Days

Performance time - 4:00 as written, longer if you vamp the solo, shorter if you cut the intro. Because I get it; we all need flexibility when wedding parties and/or emcee's are involved.

SKU: A0.534402

Composed by Jacques Leguerney. 20th Century,Standards. Score and parts. 125 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3457403. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534402).

Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) composed two string quartets. The Premier Quatuor à cordes was composed in 1925 during Leguerney??s private piano and composition study with French pianist Thérèse Cahen. His second quartet, subject of this publication by Musik Fabrik, was written between November 1947 and September 1948.

The four movements are: I. Allegro moderato; II. Intermezzo; III. Scherzando; IV. Presto-Andantino.

This work was, in part, Leguerney??s response to the Premier Quatuor à cordes (inédit) by his colleague, Henri Sauguet. Leguerney stated in a personal interview with Patrick Choukroun (18 May 1989) that: ??I wrote it a bit in opposition to Sauguet??s Premier Quatuor. It seemed to me that his quartet was without interest: just scratchings! I wanted to express my way of looking at it from the classical viewpoint of the past: it is almost in the spirit of Mozart, except for the harmonic language, of course. In fact, I wanted to fight against everything that has been done to a quartet since Beethoven??s last ones.?

The premiere of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur was by the Quatuor Pro Arte at the Abbaye de Royaumont. Before this performance, Poulenc sent Leguerney the following note: ??Fortunate man for whom twelve strings are enough to charm people, I wish you good luck and respectfully embrace you.? (Handwritten letter, Reims, 4 September 1959).

Leguerney was appointed artistic director of the Lumen recording company in 1951, and remained in this position until 1959. He produced four recordings of his music, including the Quatuor Pro Arte??s recording of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur (1947-1948) (Lumen, LD 2.440, 1958). This disc won the Grand Prix du Disque de l??Académie Charles Cros on 13 March 1959. The Pro Arte??s members were Suzanne Plazonich, Violin I; Chantal Beylier, Violin II; Nicole Gendreau, Viola; and Micheline Burtin, Cello.

Francis Poulenc wrote to Leguerney concerning this recording: ??It is very good Leguerney. Of course, frivolous as I am and shall always remain, it is the 2nd movement that I prefer. Between us, I am like you: I prefer the scherzos after the andantes; that way one is not forced to write a Finale allegro. Yours pleases me very much, in fact, so to my ears it is III-IV-I-II, in the order of pleasure.? (Manuscript letter, Bagnols, 14 October 1959)

The radio station France I broadcast the Quatuor with on 11 July 1959 on the program Schola of the series Concert de musique contemporaine, again with the Quatuor Pro Arte. An archive recording of this broadcast exists on magnetic tape.

Critic Claude Rostand wrote: ??Jacques Leguerney does not seem to have looked for special innovations either in form or language. His basic thought seems especially to have written a quartet, that is to say on one hand to have used the four voices with elegance and originality, clarity and homogeneity (four-part writing seems to always have come naturally to him, even at the piano), and on the other hand to exploit all of the supple cushioning that can result from the caress of a bow on a string.?

Critic Emile Vuillermoz wrote: ??His only ambition is to expresses clear and affectionate melodic ideas, in a highly distinguished, elegant and refined language, meaning an homage, in the beginning of our century, to the trios of the greatest stylists of our time. In fact, it is from the vocabulary of Fauré, Debussy and Ravel that he takes his grammar and syntax and that with which he carries out with his this harmonic writing that is both supple and sparse, that is so congenial to the association of four string instruments. This quartet, whose first movement is of a rare perfection, is a delicate enchantment.?

The Musik Fabrik edition of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur is taken from a photocopy of the composer??s manuscript of the full score. We also had access to the quartet parts found in Leg.

Scarborough Fair

Arranged by Nat Brookes for String Quartet

POP PAD

This arrangement takes the tune of Scarborough Fair and has some fun with it. The arrangement starts with a very tasteful section where the tune is in Violin I and the other instruments support it with gently moving accompaniment. The second section is more animated and more liberal with the tune, featuring pizzicato in the Vioilin II, Viola and Cello parts and punctuated halfway through by an ostentatious arpegiated figure. The third section is a little more harmonically adventurous, the intensity of which can be tempered by reducing the volume in the accompanying parts. Lastly, the ending recapitulates the last phrase of the tune in a busy but harmonically and rhythmically simple manor bringing the peice to a definate full stop.

This arrangement is rather versatile and could easily be addapted for more formal settings like Weddings. For example, you could simply ignore the pizzicato instruction and bow the central section, whilst the 1st Violin could play the unadorned version of the tune from the A section. In fact the accompaniment of the A section is so generously rich with subtle contrapuntal content, that a String Quartet could easily repeat it whilst varying the dynamics to good effect.

Included: Score and set of parts.

Each part is a single page long

Rehearsal marks throughout.

SKU: A0.845992

Composed by Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan. Arranged by Kyle Pudenz. Contemporary,Easter,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 19 pages. ViolinVagabond Music #6696601. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845992).

This is a gig or church service-ready arrangement of Hillsong's Who You Say I Am for string quartet. A great addition to your gig book for weddings or your musical catalog for worship/church bands that feature strings. Included with the quartet score & parts is a slash/chord lead sheet if you wish to perform this with along with guitar, piano or full band.

The form follows Hillsong's live version all the way through Chorus 3. It does not include the recap/vamp of the bridge and 4th chorus, but you can loop back on the chart from letter G to letter E if your performance requires a longer rendition. I have also taken the liberty of transposing this from the original key of F# (...oof) into the much more string & band-friendly key of G (and your purchase is all the thanks I need). I've added a few small flourishes, dynamic drops, and general instrumental interest throughout this arrangement, but would still describe this chart as sight-readable for professional players with experience playing pop/rock tunes. It's also well within the technical capability of high school or recreational ensembles with just a bit of practice, but if your violist hasn't ever seen a ghost note printed on a chart before, I would highly recommend taking 10 minutes to look it up...

Performance time - approximately 3:20 straight through, longer if you loop back to the bridge like Hillsong Worship's live version. Lots of other exit/entry points can be easily incorporated at most of the rehearsal marks.
