This may be the first string quartet arrangement of Bartok’s famous piano work Allegro Barbaro, as his music has only recently come into the public domain.  One of his first compositions for piano, written when he was 30 years old, Allegro Barbaro is a fast-paced and percussive piano work inspired by the melodies and harmonies of the Hungarian folk music that Bartok collected during his travels as an ethnomusicologist. One can also hear his early experimentation with bimodality and octatonic scales. This arrangement is based on both the published piano sheet music and Bartok’s own recorded performance of this work. His performance includes idiosyncrasies not included in the printed music and which have been incorporated in this arrangement. This is a great opener or an ideal encore for a string quartet concert.

Ravel liked Le Tombeau so much that he later orchestrated four of the dances, ending with Rigaudon. Arranged by accomplished violinist Ted Lucas, who has decades of string quartet experience, this lively dance is a perfect concert-opener or an ideal closer as an encore. This is the only piece in Le Tombeau where Ravel did not include a metronome marking, so it can be played at any spritely tempo you are comfortable with. Take a listen to part of it.

Number 8 in Book I of Debussy's two books of Preludes, the piece is an example of Debussy's experimentation with new scales, especially the pentatonic scale in this instance. The work, in Gb major, is performed almost entirely on the black keys of the piano. This arrangement for string quartet has been transposed to G major to make it easier to play for most string quartets. Take a listen to the MP3. It's only two and a half minutes long.
