It is often considered to be the first recorded bossa nova song. The music was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and the lyrics were written by Vinícius de Moraes. João Gilberto's recording is the most famous.The song was first recorded in 1957 by Brazilian singer Elizete Cardoso and released on her 1958 album entitled Canção Do Amor Demais; however, the public took little notice of her release. João Gilberto included the second recorded version of the track in 1958. Released as a single, the song became a hit and would solidify bossa nova as a permanent genre in the Latin music lexicon. The song also appeared on Gilberto's first album Chega De Saudade.The title can be translated roughly as enough longing, though the Portuguese word, saudade, carries with it a far more complex meaning. The word implies an intensity of heartfelt connection that is yearned for passionately, not unlike feeling withdrawal symptoms from a drug that makes one feel good. Another good analogy might be an intense homesickness. Chega, in this case, means no more, enough.The song form is 64 measures. It is equally split between 32 measures in a minor key and the 32 measures in a major key. Humble Vale is part of the Hancock Hymnal: 1850 compiled by Deborah Rentz Moore.The most obvious element in this beautiful melody is the predominance of the pentatonic mode. The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€�sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€�canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€�flat major chord. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

We hear it in shops, supermarkets, and radio stations all over the country for the weeks in the run up to the celebrations, as it is part of a popular compilation of hits. It was a Christmas number one in 1973 and stayed there for nine weeks. Although it was recorded in New York it is not so well known in the USA which is a surprise to me. I have always loved it because of the unusual chord progressions at the end of the Chorus, and because Noddy Holder is from the West Midlands where I was born and bred. We don’t have too many famous people from around there!It is important to keep a steady tempo but it doesn’t need to be as fast as the original (120 bpm) However It *is* in the same key as the original and follows the structure exactly, so it may be possible to play along with it before coming to rehearsal, which is always helpful. It is useful to feel the syncopation that way. We planned to record this last March but that was before Lockdown!The tune is shared between first violin, viola and cello. The second violinist needs to keep a rock steady pulse. Although it is suitable for a professional quartet to play, and the first violinist often plays the tune up an octave, I feel that it is easy enough for a quartet of Grade 5 ABRSM to play with a few modifications such as playing open strings. The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position and to stretch for the F sharps on the C string, but feel free to change the octaves or use pizzicato in the bass part if it makes things easier.The bowing is a guide only, based on the rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet, so all players should take as many bows as they need in order to feel comfortable. This is a short string quartet featuring a Gregorian melody on violin with harmony provided in the lower voices by violin, viola and cello.  It is meant to be played in a free chant style with rubato; however, mixed meters are provided to give an approximate idea of the counting.  This piece would be suitable for a school or church setting and is derived from ancient sacred music written for the Catholic Church.  It is quite an easy piece in D Dorian mode, thus no sharps or flats.  The quiet beauty of this piece is suitable for meditative or concert use.  An interlude of gentle improvisation could be added with a repeat of the theme at the end if a longer piece is desired (permission to do that hereby granted).  Students, teachers and church music directors as well as professional musicians looking for a short easy work may find this a useful addition to their repertoire.  (Please note:  the audio recording is a guide and does not necessarily reflect the proper phrasing as indicated in the score.).

This Marche was originally written for organ in his pedagogical books. I have arranged it for Instrumental Quartet in typical Romantic Symphonic style and I have filled it with expressive markings to bring out the incredible drama of this piece. There is a Trio style section in the sub-dominant key which I treat as an instrumental duet. The piece is Advanced Intermediate realizing that it pushes many of the instruments to both extremes of their ranges. It is furthering challenging due to the plethora of romantic accidentals including double sharps and double flats and constant dynamic changes. This piece amply rewards you in the end with a very impressive and dramatic repertoire performance piece.
